Default New motor problem w/ oil pressure

I bought a rebuilt 85 305 SBC through a friend of mine. It was professionally rebuilt he just never had a chance to drop it in before being sent over seas.

I looked over everything before dropping it in and everything was clean and to spec. My problem is that I just fired it up for the first time and the oil pressure at idle is about 60 psi but it will climb past that until the oil filter fails and pukes all the oil from the engine.

I have gone through 3 filters. I changed one out after I set the valves and let it idle with no oil leaks. Second filter failed with in 30 seconds of firing it up and I chalked it up to a bad seal that blew out. I put a third filter on and had the same results.

I am guessing there is an internal oil blockage but I am not sure. Is there anything I can do to remedy this with out yanking the motor again? Any ideas of where I can begin to trouble shoot this...

Any help would be great...Thanks...

Default Oil pressure relief Valve....

I am guessing there was something that got sucked up by the pump and has blocked the Oil pressure releif valve...Looks like I will be dropping the pan to see if I can put a new pump on with out having to yank the engine...

Any suggestions....Its in a 78 Elcamino in case you were wondering...

Good thought...Anything in particular I should be looking for? Or should I just clean and inspect it?

was the motor completely assembled while it was out? if not, a dirt dobber may have gotten in the oil galley and built a nest causing the problem. not uncommon in the south.

When I removed the filter the cast bypass valve was cracked in two....I swapped it with one form the other motor and all is good.

Not sure how it cracked but I have ran the motor and I am holding good at 60 psi...All I need is an exhaust to quiet the open headers and I should be able to burn a little rubber....
