Default Trip to Atlanta

I'm planning a trip down to Atlanta in January from MD. We'll be taking a bus down and staying in a nearby Hilton. We'll be there for 3 nights/4 days. I'm planning on using my credit card for most of the things we spend money on while we're down there but I do want to bring cash as well for taxi fare and whatnot (unless one of you guys wouldn't mind meeting up and letting me borrow your ride for a couple days lol). I've never been to Atlanta, but I can't imagine it would be much different price wise other than maybe the tax %. How much cash should I bring down with me for things that need paid in cash? I have to know ahead of time because my credit union doesn't have branches down there.

No just a normal vacation type trip. Maybe hit up the aquarium and go to dinner. I can use my card for that stuff, mostly I'd need cash for the taxi's, that's really all I can think of though. Bad thing is the checkout for the hotel is noon the day we come home so we have to check out then but our bus doesn't leave to come home until after 8pm so we'd have almost 8 hours with no where to keep our bags...plan at that point is up in the air, possibly just go to the bar in the hotel and get drinks.

If you need dinner and a show http://www.medievaltimes.com/atlanta.aspx is pretty entertaining. The possibilities are nearly endless. Lots of restaurants, bars, attractions, places to shop etc. It's really difficult to put a number on it. I'd carry as much as you feel comfortable spending. There are a couple of HUGE malls one of which houses the above Medieval Times attraction.

Medieval times is prety cool. Aquarium is nice, Zoo Atlanta is one of the best Zoos in the country. World of coke is alright, bunch of misc things around Turner Field/GA Dome and centennial park. The varsity restaurant on spring street. Stone mountain lasershow is awesome if you've never seen something like it.

We went to Medieval Times recently, those other suggestions sound good though. We only have 1.5-2 days of free time so it shouldn't be hard to figure it all out

I stayed about 2 blocks from there in the Hyatt earlier this year - lots of places to grab drinks, dinner, and have fun. Cash - bring a couple hundred. You probably won't need a taxi - I walked everywhere.

Are you a beer drinker? There are a few good places I could recommend.

I'd love to stop at Vengeance considering I was contemplating one of their H/C packages. But I'll have my girl with me and she wouldn't be thrilled about that lol and yes, I am a beer drinker.

One thing that is a little disappointing is our time of arrival and departure. It looks like we'll arrive in Atlanta at 9:45am but we can't check into the hotel until 3 I think and departing checkout is 11am and our transportation doesn't leave until 2pm so we'll have a lot of what could be free time but we'll have to hold our bags the whole time because we won't have anything to do with them

I finalized plans last night, it was a lot more expensive than I planned because we're staying 2 extra nights now, $910 for travel and hotel and losing 2 more days of work...she better appreciate this lol

We decided to stay at the Artmore ($607 for 5 nights vs the original plan the Hilton Atlanta for $440 for 3 nights) and then I spent a little bit more on travel for convenience, instead of doing the bus both ways for $276, we're taking the bus down and then flying home for a total of $303.

You must not travel much - traveling's expensive & time consuming.

For discounts to stuff, try google/half off depot/croupon, etc. Have fun. Stay off the Marta!

No this is the first time I've really made plans to travel myself. Looking at bus reviews after the fact I'm not liking what I'm hearing. I didn't know the jail was right next to the greyhound station in Atlanta and I looked at a google streetview and it doesn't look like a good area at all really...

I'll probably end up wishing I would have rented a car and drove myself lol. Hopefully nothing bad happens. I dislike the city and avoid it at all costs. I lived an hour from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for 23 years and I've only came within 10 miles of it maybe 5 or 6 times in those 23 years

I never take the bus anywhere. I always fly or drive myself. Considering who HAS to use the bus system, you typically have crime in the near by areas. I would put ATL just below Detroit, Baltimore, and Cleveland for crime (didn't look at stats, just my perception). It's not horrible - just be aware of your surroundsings. Lots of homeless people when I was down in that same area this summer. ATL is a fun city, however, and the largest US city not built on a river, ocean, or waterway.

Since you are flying back, I would try and do round trip - it shouldn't be too much more than a one way. Plus flying is significantly faster if it's a direct flight.

It actually was significantly more expensive to fly both ways and the timing wasn't working out because we wanted a nonstop flight. Everything is already purchased and non-refundable so I'm kinda stuck with what I got. I'm hoping it won't be TOO bad at 3pm on a Wednesday...

I know the greyhound site says no pepper spray, pocket knives, etc...I planned on bringing both just in case :/

We are only 45 mins north of Atl if you can talk your lady into stopping by to check out the shop and hang out! Let me know if you can make it!

After looking at the cost of cab fare I doubt it...They want $40 just to go from the hotel to the airport!
