Default Commerce is closing down......

A buddy of mine is a Sub-contractor and tells me ATL DW is selling the land off to some builders to build neighborhoods. From what I hear they're got plans to tear everything down after next year's racing season.

No it's for real. From what i'm told it's been in the works for a while, but the builders couldn't come up with a price good enough.

Means to an end my friend.....

the tracks that are left, if any, will naturally be packed.. maybe i should start building a car that runs nasty on the street, rather then on the track..

cuz thats where im going dammit.. to the street if the tracks close.. the ****** dogooders will not stop me from racing.. until they lock me up

I've heard about this for a while. I don't really much enjoy that track anyways.

If its true then its the stupidest thing thing they could have done. The Southern Nationals is one of the NHRA's higher attendance races. Its standing room only every year.

Speaking of the NHRA. This is one of the few tracks that is actually owned by the NHRA. There are alot of rumors about the NHRA right now, not the least of which being Bruton Smith is gonna purchase the NHRA and relocate its base to Charlotte, N.C.

That would be fine with me because Charlotte is about the same drive as Commerce for me and Im sure he would put a track in the Charlotte area.

Although Commerce is not one of my favorite of tracks, it is close and I will hate not to have a place to go when the notion strikes me. Sucks for Year One also. I wish the owner of Road Atlanta would step up and build something, he would really have something with by having a 1/4 mile strip right next to the road course. BUT, I doubt he would be interested.

I completely agree. Well, as much as I don't like to street race, seems like that is going to be the only alternative.

The almighty $ , gents. Somebody figured out they could make more cash by making a mall or subdivision out of a piece of land than a drag strip. You see this stuff all the time.Drag strips and Mom & Pop speed shops are rapidly becoming an endangered species.

I'm still a bit skeptical. No offense to anyone, but I have heard the same thing from "second hand sources" about commerce for years. I have also heard that the NHRA said they would buy the land before they would let that happen. Guess we will have to see.

Yup, and with the constant increase in fuel prices, it's only getting worse.

Way I see it, worst case scenario, I have to travel to SDR on Friday nights for TnT. Better track anyway even if it takes 3-4 hours to get there.

I think it will be a lot better to go to sdr once they finish that construciton and we dont have to take the detour... Someone seriously should look into buying Stone Mountain Airport and convert it...

Yeh, if you remember there use to be alot of street car races held there but no more. Maybe Year One will come back to Bristol for their event. It was always packed up there when they held it. There was almost no one there the last 2 that atl held for year one. Sucks to see it all go! I've been goin to all the street car and and super chevy and fun ford events there for awhile now.

But again, this is just a rumor. Unless I hear specifics instead of rumors, despite the source, I am gonna take the info with a grain of salt.
