Default 3.42 > 3.73

I miss my 3.42 gears on the highway down here. I've gotten used to and like the 3.73s until I get on the highway. I able to run with some pretty strong bikes and cars but these gears are causing me to shift into 5th gear too early. Most bikes want to start around 80 so I need that top speed. I liked how I could go over 110 in 3rd and around 135 with the 3.42s as opposed to having to shift into 5th around 120 with the 3.73s.

I think my clutch is finally surrendering to the power because I got a little slippage last night shifting into 5th while running a bike. It was installed about 32k miles ago and has a good bit of drag and nitrous runs on it so I guess it's held up for a while.

Hey Ken, are you going to be in the Miami area anytime soon?

BTW, the gear whine is back but not as bad as it was initially. Should I torque down the pinion nut again? How do I know how much to tighten it?

Question ... what does a 3.73 get ya time wise over 3.42 out of hole or 60ft and a 4.11?

C'mon now Jeff, I just have a natural curiousity to compare vehicles.

There are still many factors to take into consideration but basically the higher gear take away the flat spot at the bottom of first gear. Track prep, tires, tire presure and other factors will determine how much time you pick up.

I've only gotten a few runs in since I switched from 3.42s to 3.73s and it seems like I'm cutting about a tenth better 60' times with a full weight M6 and Nittos. I'm also launching a little conservatively.

I have no personal experience with 4.11 gears.

I've got 4.11's on a M6 car, Commerce is such a crummy track I LOST 2 tenths 60' because of impossible wheelspin. Of course that time was with street tires. I did gain 1 mph trapspeed even with the horrible launches.

Street wise the 4.11's are incredible! I'm used to it now, but the car felt like it shed 300 pounds after swapping gears. If I had to do it again I would go 4.30's without thinking twice. My cam likes the gears and so does my right foot!

Bobby you can TQ it once more but too tight and it will fry the pinion bearing. The way your gears started out it might JUST be a bearing. Since the noise got better after the retourqe I bet the pinion bearing is the cause of the noise, now tell the truth how long did you wait to spray the new set up

I gave it a full tank of gas before I started driving it hard. It was a good 500 miles before I sprayed it. I first got the whine after taking it to the track with the DRs and I only made 2 passes and didn't spray it there.

What is the pinion nut supposed to be torqued to? I can live with a little whine, it's really not that bad. I don't want to risk over tightening it if it isn't going to harm anything the way it is.
