Default Need some help..

It seems that the rear in the car I just bought now has damaged pinion bearings. It started making noise after about 400-500 miles and the fluid was burnt and about 2 inches lower than it should be from the inspection hole. It was leaking at the pinion seal, so I had that replaced today and the fluid changed in it. I'm not sure of how long it will last so I'm not going to chance driving it until I get a plan on what to do.

I have another rear that I bought that only has 14k on it, but my car has a 3 channel rear, and the spare rear is a 4 channel. What should I do? Make the 4 channel rear a 3 channel which will require some machine work and removing all the insides, or would it be possible to take the internals out and put them in the rear presently under the car? Input is appreciated. With this happening, I'm having to drive my Chevelle to work and I don't really want to do that.

You should sell me the 4 channel carrier............ That will fix all your problems.. JK! Im not sure honestly, Whats all needed to convert the 4 channel over? You could just go have the pinion bearing replaced along with the seals. If the fluid was only 2in below the hole then there was still plenty of lubircation so I bet the carrier is still good. It shouldnt be much.

I took it to a dealer yesterday and they said that there was some damage. They told me that it could damage the axle bearings, etc. I basically want to make sure this rear diff is not going to give me any problems when I decide to take it to the track. I'm a newbie to rear diffs, so I have no idea what can be damaged. I'll check in the gears and axles section also.

If it is as easy as replacing the pinion bearing, then once I get it fixed I would have no problem selling you this rear. Is there a differential shop in the Bham area that could take a look at it for me?

Me to, Ive never really studyied rears well at least not in cars, lol. Did they say damgae to the bearing itself or what? Im guessing its just the bearing. Well, its a 10 bolt so its eventually going to give you problems but I would think after the bearing was replaced and a good flush out then you'd be fine until it grenaded.

Its not hard to replace it, its geting everything back aligned is where it gets tricky. I cant think of a good place right off the top of my head. Ill ask around.

I'm taking it to Liberty Auto in Trussville today at lunch. He sounded like he knew a lot about them. I'll know here in a little bit.

Well, against my better judgement I drove the Camaro this morning, and what do you know halfway to work this morning the noise goes away and you can barely hear it. I did take it to a mechanic at lunch and we drove it and the noise is barely noticeable now. Hell, my 99's rear was louder than this one is now. I felt kinda stupid telling the mechanic that the noise was 10 times louder than it is now. We did put it up on the rack and about the only thing we could find that could cause the noise is the rear ujoint seems a little loose. I told him to go ahead and fix that and I'll see how it does today and in the morning.

I'm almost thinking that the fluid that was changed yesterday was probably the original or close to it. It's weird though that after changing it yesterday it was still noisy and then halfway to work this morning the noise started getting less and less.

If you are wanting the other rear he has, I can tell you he lied about it.... It only has 13,000 miles on it, think it was 13,05x when i pulled it, but it is a perfect working rear. I put a moser in mine. And brandon, you like buying things in Ga don't you? Hopefully your problems will be solved though and that one want cause you any problems.
