Default New Orleans help

I may be moving to the Harvey area for work, never been to New Orleans, far as living what are some places to avoid? I have a general fear of dying so nicer the area the better, living in Houston, I know any location generaly ending in the word, "ward" isnt going to be a safe bet. Far as paying rent goes, I don't really care about $850+ for a one bed room if it's in a good area.

Safest bet would be the northshore but the comute would not be fun...mandeville, covington, slidell areas would be safest.

^^ yea but it's becoming so overcrowded over here. the northshore is becoming very unpleasant to live. you sit in traffic and wait in a long line for everything. everyone moved over here after katrina.

Yeah and Metairie isn't any better with traffic and commuting. Since you are going to be working in the harvey area I think you should just live on the westbank. There are some apts. on Terry pkwy thats further down when it turns into Wall blvd. called Calypso Bay I think. Those apts are real nice they have garages that come with the apts but i think you have to pay more for them. If you don't mind commuting across the Miss river bridge the apts off Tchoupitoulas called The Saulets are very nice but the last time I checked a 1 bdrm was going for 1150 a month but don't take my word for it. As for the word "ward" the whole city has wards if you lived uptown that is the better area such as the garden district and the area going up tchoupitoulas and St. charles ave. is a good area.

I recommend you come over here for a weekend and have a look around. There are good and bad areas mixed all together down here. The two areas that I've actually enjoyed living are Belle Chasse and Slidell. There are some decent places in Harvey. I would come and spend some time down here look at it during the day, night, and do your drive during business hours before I would sign a lease or buy. Good luck with your move. If you need help or need to be shown around, be sure and post up. I'm sure none of us would mind helping you out.

Thumbs up Be Careful Where You Live

South Shore Or North Shore There Is Crime & Drugs, But The Westbank Harvey Area Is Off Limits(my Oppinion) . I Would Recommend Stopping In At Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office Which Is In Harvey Right Off Westbank Exspwy. East Side Of The Tunnel, They Can Give You There Opinion Of What Might Be Safe On The Westbank. Harahan & River Ridge Area Very Safe, But Very Pricey. Look At It Like This, If Its A Good Price Beware. New Orleans Is Off Limits (my Opinnion). Be Safe, Be Aware Of Where You Park Your Hotrod !!!!

My uncle is a JP and they will all tell you the same thing, its getting bad everywhere! They travel to commit crimes as-well! Dont get me wrong there are nice places to live around here with beautiful appt and homes, but its hard to avoid the crime down here where ever you go!! Best bet would be to come down here for a weekend like stated above and look at your options!! Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys, I'll know more in a few months if I go or not. But if I do, it'll be a big transition. But I have met a few folks from here at Thunder Shoot outs, so I know y'all have a big community down there.

+1 for Belle Chasse, lived in Old Algiers for 5 years, a couple off Gen Degaull and 3 right on Pelican at the ferry, never had any trouble. I worked on the Naval Air Station in Belle Chasse and I know the cops there keep the rifraft out. Its a better drive to harvey as well that Slidell or Fat City, and the northshore.

Keep your fbody in a garage or have a great alarm and good insurance, Thieves have moved into NOLA and they have reeked havoc.

Looks like you followed the same path as me. I was with 773 in Belle Chasse, then went to 773 Atlanta. Pretty interesting. Then, of course, Pendleton, and now back at 4th MAW on Dauphine St.

I used to install the phone lines back there at the port before I transferred up here to Slidell. Man, I miss the food across the street at Jack Dempsey's!

Maybe so. Doubt you've seen my car though. I've only driven it to work twice. If you've seen the car in my sig, than you've definitely seen me. I'm over at 4th MAW ALD (5th Deck).

You work with Smith over in the G-4 for MAW and Roeche. Ya Ive never seen your T/A I just seen the red one with the american racing rims, the other blue formula like mine with the nasty looking 16's on it. Then mine I know everyone has seen my car there.

Try the apt. complex on the corner of Farrington Ave. and the West Bank Expressway. Pre Katrina it was a very safe complex. They gave great discounts to Jeff. Parrish Sheriffs So the bad element stayed away with all the cruisers parked there all day and night long. But i know before the storm the waiting list was damm long. I haven't lived in the area for a few years though but it's worth a try. I'll ask around i have a few friends still there. Try Terrytown also there are a few gated complexes there.
