Honestly I haven't looked into that enough to find that out. I agree that the V6 Camaros are a bit ignored, and even I ignore them quite a bit, so I don't know a definitive answer yet.

If you went through autotrader collecting REAL '96-'97 RS VIN numbers and decoded a large sample of them, I'm sure you could figure out an answer to this. You'd have to do a fairly large sample, because those ground effects were really popular to add on to base Camaros (and now they are really popular to take off because a replacement set costs almost as much as most people are paying for high mileage '96-'97 RSes), and a simple set of RS emblems would complete the clone, so the potential for clones is pretty high.

One little funny fact I've never spent the time to verify is that "supposedly" the RS ground effects (and yes, I'm speaking only about the '96-'97 real RSes) are a little different from the aftermarket kit nearly identical to them. If I remember right, GM designed them off of an ALREADY AVAILABLE set of ground effects, but enlarged the holes in the front for better air flow to the air dam. Two other tidbits... I believe RKsport may have been the manufacturer of the kit GM modified, but they may have just SOLD the ground effects and not produced them... I don't know. And... I believe the GM kit is made of sheet molding compound (SMC). I don't know what the similar aftermarket (RKsport or otherwise) is made out of. I remember a report from '95 that said that the '96 RS would have ground effects made from SMC, whether that's true or not, I don't currently know.

Y3B does indeed identify 01-02 SLP RSes.

Y3F was definitely sport appearance package for 98-02 on V6 or Z28. Don't know about '96-'97.

R7T is the code SSes in '96-97. WU8 only applies to '98-'02!!!!!

More or less right... but the SS package was only 305hp with the TOTL exhaust. With the standard no-option Z28 exhaust, '96 SS was rated at 300hp.
Late production 96 SS Camaros use both the WU8 and R7T option codes.I know this to be a fact as I own one.
Correct advertised horsepower is 305 and 310 with the TOTL exhaust.

Hope this helps..

That was a pretty old post of mine, but the premise still stands (well, other than me getting irritated at Johnny ). Not all '96-'97 SSes have WU8. Some do. But not all. R7T was the main code for '96-'97. R7T will not be found on '98-'02 because WU8 is the main code.

I think I went through a lotttttt of detail on this issue in a topic in this section about the LT4 Camaros and how to determine them. I forgot the title of the topic, but I bet you'd enjoy the discussion SS Z28 because it was pretty interesting.

Default 96 ss

You are referring to the monochromatic option, body color mirrors and roof panel, much nicer than the black mirrors and roof panel especially on a non t-top car, I believe all the early SS cars have a wu8 listed on the rpo option decal drivers door, also there were 2 SLP decals on the drivers door jamb and 1 on the pass door jamb, early SS cars also had CAE on the rpo option tag for the handeling charge from the ST Therese GM plant to SLP in Lasalle Quebec

It's not finished, but I don't know when I'm EVER going to have time to finish it. It's been sitting like this hidden from being publicly visible on my site for about 6 months now. I have a lot of '96-'97 SS info here.
