Default Need Info on 86 Camaro (limited edition?)

I might be picking up an 86 Camaro IROC z28 which is supposed to be a limited editon something-or-other that is not too common.

Anyway, there is supposedly nothing much wrong with it except some engine trouble, so I was thinking of having the engine rebuilt, installing a new transmission, brakes, etc- you know, the works.

Just wondering what info I can get on the "special edition" that this car can be, and if it would be worth it to put in all this work.

I would pass on it unless it's a 1LE car. Lots of rear caliper problems with this vintage; I put 200,000 miles on a '85 IROC.

I think it goes beyond the 1LE... he mentioned it had something along the lines of a corvette engine in it. I did some searching all thisafternoon and couldn't find anything online about official mods like that- just figured maybe some of you guys would know something else. let me know-

kudos to TravWS6, I found some useful input.

I checked out iroc-z.com and found this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
~ 1986 IROC-Z Key Points of Interest ~

To distinguish a 1986 IROC-Z on the street, they had a third brake light on the rear hatch at the top. They had the PE1 Aluminum Wheels. The double stripe just above the ground effects had the black stripe on the bottom. The IROC-Z door emblems were towards the front of the door under the sideview mirror.

No convertible was available in 1986

Leather was not an available fabric in 1986

The 5.7 Liter 350ci engine was still not available in 1986

All 305 TPI LB9 motors (1985-1992) came with one of two basic cams. An easy way to identify the type of cam on an LB9 car is to look at the tach: the lesser cams have a yellow line at 4500 and red line at 5000; the hotter cams have a yellow line at 5000 and red line at 5500.

Note: The 350 5.7L was available with the 5 speed manual transmission as RPO 1LE beginning late in 1986 and through the 1990 model year. Chevrolet has no record of just how many were made. They were essentially hidden from the public. They had the A/C delete, radio delete and no power options as well as the same options as the 1LE cars everyone knows about (no fog lights, baffled gas tank, larger brakes). The car could only be ordered and very few people new about it and therefore very few were made. The dealer actually had to contact the manufacturer to obtain instructions on how to order this car because it was not ordered using the normal ordering procedures. This ordering secrecy was the main reason that very few were made. The car was offered as a model that more closely resembled the cars raced under the IROC racing series. I personally have never seen one of these cars nor have I met anyone who owns one of these cars. This information comes from two published sources from my library of information on these cars. It is repeated here for your information. I would be very wary of someone claiming that they have a car that is a 1LE with a 5 speed. Anyone who does have one of these cars, knows what they have and has the documentation on it. If you don't see documentation, then it probably is not a 1LE 5 speed car.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

From what I heard it had a 350 5.7L.
I'm going to go check it out again, but if that is the model would it be worth it?

The rarest option codes for production vehicles in 1986 were:

C49: Rear window wiper w/washer - 1,566 units
L69: Engine, 305ci, 190HP V8 - 74 untis
QAC: Tires, P235/60R15 Blackwall - 4 units
UL6: Radio, AM with clock - 813 units

That's all I can add...

Well, this is what i know... it's an 86 with a 350 5.7L, but the serial numbers say that it is a 305 block.

There only way this seems possible (matches serial numbers) is if a 305 block was ordered and then the engine was changed because either A) the person wanted a 350 block with an automatic tranny, or B) the 305 was shot at one point and since they needed a new engine, they went for an upgrade.

Everything including the serial numbers say it's an 86 IROC-Z with 305 5.0L with an automatic, cept it got a 350 5.7 in it.

HOLY CRAP. What is this speak of 3rd gens with 350s and 5 speeds from the factory? I know this is a bit off topic but I have NEVER heard of this engine/trans combo being available from the factory, even as a secret option that many apparently didn't know about. Does anyone have anymore info on this?

Well sorry guys you made me do it. I knew I put these photos in my computer for some reason. 1986 iroc-z black with goldinterior and silver rims and tpi 305(lesser cam) just found that out. First car owned when I was 17 in H.S. The pictures are a little dated/old. hehe.

Here we go again with a 350 5 speeds!! Who ever wrote that web page needs to get some facts correct. There is no way a non world class T-5 would make it a few miles. Well atleast with me driving. This is coming from a guy that owns a 90 Iroc with a 305TPI, 5 speed, dual cats, oil cooler, 3.45 posi, G92 package car. All I needed to get a 1LE code was to drop my power options and A/C. The HELL with that. lol

The 1LE option was the big secret the first few years and a dealership stumbled onto it.

Technically, this POST is only a day old, but this THREAD is ancient!

I'd be curious how you have a 6-cyl Camaro w/ 350 cubic inches. Sounds like BS to me. Or are you describing a dealer special w/ "Connecticut 350" decals slapped on it?

Don't forget, the 3rd-gen F-body was never offered w/ a 350 / 5-speed combination, regardless of what the internet says. I would've owned one if it had been.

No, you don't. Even if you had one of the few supposed L98 / 350 test cars that have been rumored to exist, it was never offered with a factory 5 speed transmission. Souce: Thirdgen.org

I know some will call BS... But I actually owned an 89 IROC... L98 w the T5WC trans... It had no radio, no power windows, locks, AC, fog lights, hard top, bare bones 1 LE car....

At the time, I had no idea what I owned and I traded it on the 93 Z28 when they first came out... what a dumb ***!! It was a sweet car....
