Default Authentic SS

I am looking to buy an SS. How do I tell if it's authentic or not? Besides calling SLP what are the hardest pieces to fake? Is there airbox any different? What about the facia, I have seen some with SS on them and some that just say Camaro.

If I am going to pay for an SS I want it to be authentic. Otherwise I could just get a Z and mod it with SLP parts.

Thanks

Look on the driver side door. There are a bunch of codes on a sticker. An SS will have WU8 on it. Also look on the passenger side door, there may be an SLP Option list on there.

Thanks. Now let me ask how can you tell from photos that do not show the doors? Just curious as to what things give away a car as a true SS.
i.e I know that Z28 with the single exhaust pipe that turns down is really a rebadged V6 3.8L.

Thoughts?

look through your RPO codes in the jam of the driver door to see if you see the code WU8 & Y2Y. That is a sure way of telling.

There is no way from photos or even door stickers. They both can be faked and/or changed at will. The original build sheet and other factory documentation are the best way. Plenty of clones out there already.

There are too many good clones out there to tell from a photo. I doubt anyone would go through the trouble to fake a door RPO code sticker.

Actually, I heard there was some guy on ebay selling them for a while. He now sells through PM for SS owners who have legitimately destroy their stickers.

Thats what I was referring to. One of Hambuger's guys was selling them. In time, someone will start repoping them. At that point, a cloned car can have all grades of SLP options.

As I mentioned, original factory build sheet and documentation are the best way to authenticate a car. Original window stickers are also helpful.

I called SLP with a VIN #, and they gave me every bit of info they could, including the build date, where the car was delivered, and the date. I don't know if they still do that, but it was just last spring, and they were very helpful.

If it has been converted with hood, tail, badges etc Who really cares??? It's not like there were any real performance differences. If it looks good why not?

To someone who wants something authentic, not just a clone... they care.

the front grille, can be the same as the Z28...the glossy SS badged one was an option. pretty much everything on the SS can be cloned, so using the VIN is pretty much the only way to be 100% certain.

what exhaust tips did the 02 Z28's have, btw? were they still getting the rectangular tips?

the stock SS's had the two rather small single pipes out each side. or optioned with the dual/dual, or center mount dual, both of which could be added on .

Not all of them. It was an option.
