NHRA Special Edition Firebird Formula and TransAm
RPO (Option Code) 1SH
The NHRA Special Edition was a commemorative edition offered from 2000 to 2002. It was created to help celebrate Pontiac’s major sponsorship of the National Hot Road Association (NHRA) which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2001. Pontiac became the Official Car of the NHRA upon Oldsmobile's departure as Official Car at the end of the 1995 season.
The GM factory option code for the NHRA package was 1SH. This option code added $1,070 - $1,095 to the sticker price depending on the model year and base car to which it was applied. The package included dealer installed NHRA specific badges and key-chains produced by Morgan Design Group, a power steering cooler that later became standard on all 2002 F body cars, P245/50ZR16 Good Year Eagle GSC tires on 16"x8” chrome 5 spoke rims, a Hurst manual shifter for M6 manual cars, and a higher ratio (3.23 vs. 2.73) rear end for A4 automatic cars. The only colors that were available with the 1SH option code were red, white, pewter, and black.
Pontiac Historical Services indicates that exact production number details (combinations of colors, options, etc.) are not available. Fortunately, some detail on total production numbers does exist. In 2000 there were 215 NHRA Firebirds produced, of which 118 were TransAm’s. In 2001 there were 145 made while in 2002 there were 535 made resulting in 895 total NHRA Firebirds produced. The rarest version of the NHRA is a Formula convertible of which approximately 15 were produced. One of the main reasons for the low production numbers of the NHRA package is the fact that customers had to choose between the very popular WS6 package and the 1SH package. The two could not be combined. Many customers chose the WS6 package over the 1SH because they felt it was a better deal due to the more apparent performance and appearance modifications that it included. The result is one of the rarest factory option codes in Firebird history other than some extremely rare pace car editions.

Tires wear out and do little for performance compared to what was standard and the rims were not specific to the NHRA package, you could get them on other TA's, correct? 3.23 gears...didn't all auto TA's come with 3.23 gears as standard? I'm no numbers guru, but I know all the auto TA's I have owned or been around have had 3.23 or 3.42
So we are down to stickers, keychain, shifter for the manual cars and a PS cooler. Can you call a PS cooler a performance upgrade? I'm not trying to downgrade the cars, I have one myself. I just have shake my head in amazement when people start talking about some stickers making something rare and desireable or a performance upgrade. I can see the rarity side of it. To me, if you are not adding 20-40 more horse with a package, it is not a performance upgrade...just a visual upgrade like a set of ground effects or special fog lights and chrome trim.

In teh end, I think most of us own these because we enjoy them, not as an investment. Later!

2002 NHRA Formula
I will tell you that the NHRA website didnt help my cause. The dealer had done his research and knew there were only 62 made. Book value for a 02 NHRA Formula is $14,100. They wanted $17,000 and we worked out a deal from there. It is 100% stock and 60,000 miles, so I went for it.

Hey out there! New here, just picked up 2001 black NHRA SE A4 with 34000 miles. This car is completely stock, no mods. Bought it from a dealer in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dealer had no idea what he had!! I am the third private owner. This car is awesome!!! I previously owned a bright blue metallic '95 T/A A4. Right now my '01 is parked next to my '79 Firebird Formula with a 548 cu. in. BB Chevy, full tube chassis, 2 spd Powerglide, Strange 9" rear w/spool, runs 10.20's on slicks w/trans brake. I've owned this car since I was 17, it took a total of ten years and a ton of cash to build. There is nothing cooler than a trip to the local burger joint for a Weds. night car show. Yeah thats right it has an emissions sticker and plates!! Don't forget it runs low tens at a mile high altitude Bandimere speedway!!! Anyways that car was my dream car when it was built but, the '01 is my dream car now . Thanks for readin'.

NHRA Firehawk?
No, not from anything I have read or seen but, this is all new to me. As far as I can find, there were 145 total NHRA SE's built in '01. I would love to know how many were black TA automatics. Anyone? Anyone?
