my guess is it had electrical problems and the owner rerouted those to main power? does this drain the battery with the radio turned off?

also, i wouldnt expect a response within 30 minutes when you have a strange problem like this...

Wow, sounds like the BCM is not functioning the way it should and is still sending curent to the accessories. It is supposed to do that with the doors closed but not after you open them. Could be the BCM or it could be as simple as the doors have bad switches that are not registering that the door opens and are staying compressed. Not sure but those are my 2 best guesses. It would be odd though that both would be bad at the same time. That is a weird problem.

Does the problem occur for both doors or only the driver's door? Usually the problem is the switch which is in the latch. It may be need to be cleaned, adjusted, or replaced. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get to it so I can't help you there, but from what I've read, its in the latch.

sounds like the head unit is hard wired to constant batt power and not switched

I've had that happen in a 3rd gen before.. it was the ignition solenoid and cylinder.. since everything is still on with the ignition off I'd make sure those were in proper working order.. sadly the only troublshooting from the point you are at is insepecting them

I doubt anything is hard wired or an ignition problem. These cars have RAP (Retained Accessory Power), which means that the windows, radio, and interior lights still have power for a few minutes after the key is removed from the ignition (typically 10min). The power is supposed to cut out when a door is opened. If the power doesn't cut out when a door is opened, the problem is almost always the door switch.
