I was told the same thing by my bank when I had ~$450 taken from my account. The transactions were used as CC and they were used in the town I worked in, but at places I had never been too. When the bank finished the investigation they told me the same thing that the detective told you.
I still use 'pay at the pump', because to be honest, up until now, I hadn't heard anything outside of what they told me. I thought it was BS..LOL
