Default My first trip to the track

I went to the track today for the first time. My first time down was embarassing. I was going to try to be cool and shift myself. Well, needless to say the adrenaline was pumping pretty hard. My first run started with a mind boggling 1.185 R/T . Then when it was time to shift to second I think I tried to see how hard I could hit the shifter and proceeded to cram it into neutral. Only for a second though. The end result was a 8.705 E/T @ 82.64 mph.
Needless to say my next 3 passes got better. #2 8.381 E/T @ 84.96 mph #3 8.362n E/T @ 85.02 #4 8.375 E/T @ 84.65. My best 60' time was a 1.823 on my last run. I also got dyno'ed on a Mustang Dyno (which everyone says gives lower readings) and my rwhp was 307.2. I was disappointed in the rwhp but there is nothing that I can do. The next guy on the dyno was a late 80's Mustang GT pumping out 245 rwhp and sounding like a pulp-wood truck.

those are some good 60' times, what tires were you running.
Also if you get your car dyno tuned you could possibly pick up another 10-15rwhp. I picked up 15 myself I wented from 310 to 325 just from a tune

I am running stock goodyear F-1 tires. I did a small burn out and then staged and just punched it off of idle. I didn't load the converter up. I barely spun at all. How much does dyno tuning cost and who does it?

that's really good for F1's
Dyno tuning around me is around 250-300 bucks it takes about an hour unless they find a problem that takes more time and if it takes more dyno time the place I go to charges like 25 bucks for any addition dyno time. I don't know of any places by you but you want to go to someone you trust, and has a good rep.

Rok is right. dyno tuning can bring out some hp. i really need a good tune on my truck, but i need money first, since i am in college. and i am impressed with those f-1's to get you that 60 ft. Hope you had fun for your first time at the track!

Do yourself and your tranny a favor. Do NOT shift an A4 manually. Put it in "D" and hold on tight.

i've always been curious on whether such a thing harms the tranny or not unit... what's your reasoning on this? i always assumed that with electronically controlled transmissions, the tranny just waits for an electric signal to say "shift from first into second" and then the tranny does it's job... or perhaps a message to the tranny tht says "shift from 4th into second" (such as would be useful in one of the dead zones that stock A4 converters seem to have) and so on. if that's the way it works, what does it matter if the PCM gives the tranny the message, or if i do?

i understand that on a mostly stock car, in a drag race or from a dig, the computer can shift more reliably and quicker than i can... but what about from a roll? suppose i'm in one of those nasty dead spots where the computer and converter decide that they would rather accelerate the car from cruising 2500rpm up to shift point, making my car look like a dog compared to the cocky bastard (i'm assuming) who'd currently be pulling on me... instead of dropping a gear and revving from 4000rpm or whatever.
