My first kill.
I have only had this car 3 weeks. I am tooling along about 30 or so, had just put it in 3rd. Up next to me pulls this really nice white IROC Z, mid 80-ish. He slows down to pull even with me, revs one time and then punches it. I punched it as well, but he was pulling ahead, his tail is like at my front wheels now and he is still gaining. So I put it in 2nd at around 45 and punch it. OMG I was so impressed. My car passed his azz really quick, I could hear his engine rapping out too. I think I shifted into 3rd at around 5500 rpm, somewhere around 60mph or so, then I really started pulling on him. He started flashing his lights and I let off at around 90-95mph still in 3rd. I was ahead by like 3 car lengths then. He pulled up to me at the next light and said "just want you to know this is no beater, I have some work to do to keep up with you". That felt great!
So what will those cars do, and should an LS1 always beat them, stock for stock? Sorry, I don't know if he had anything extra under the hood or not but I know he had some money into the exterior, just curious on how those 80's camaros run. I think the back of his car said like "cross fire injection" or something like that. I know this was long, but I am just getting started with F bodies and I am becoming addicted. You have to understand my previous car was a 1.8liter Plymouth Laser!
An L98 powered Iroc-Z was good for 14's stock.
The best year had 240hp 345tq.
Most stock GT Stangs you run into will be similar competition to the Iroc.
Nice kill. Learn your gearing and you'll beat them by bigger margins.
cross fire injection
!! They are one of the slowest v8's ever made, the engine was a joke they put in camaros a couple of sad,sad years. I know 2 people that have them, both almost stock and in good condition. 200hp v6's hand them their *** without even trying. When you race them, they should be so far back that you cant see them anymore in the rearview mirror. They look even more pitiful when they punch it and the tiny hood louver flaps open
Glad you really like your Z, Have fun with it...take some time to get used to the new power before you start downshifting and rolling through the gears really fast.

Cross Fire in the Camaro's was done in 83. IROC-Z = 85-90. Too many engines... TPI L98 350's, TPI LB9 305's, TBI LO3 305's, 4bbl LG4 305's, and 4bbl L69 305's.
The highest hp was in 90 with the L98 at 245hp @ 4400 and 345tq @ 3200 with 3.23 gears. The L98 was only available with a 700R4 automatic. The L98 came to the Camaro in 87.
The weakest was the LG4 4bbl. with 170hp and 250tq. The last year for that was 87. The LO3 TBI took the place in 88 with 170hp but 5 more ft/lbs of torque over the LG4.
The 4bbl L69 was only available for 85 and 86, though only 74 were made in 86. It had 190hp and 240ft/lbs and came only with a 5 speed and 3.73's!
The LB9 TPI 305 first was only available with the 700R4 when it came out in 85. The 5 speed was available in 87. The most power it had was in 90 with 230hp @ 4400 and 300tq @ 3200 with 3.42's. 2 versions of the LB9 though. The automatic came with a lower output 190-220hp (it varied between 85-90). There was a lovely option called G92 for the 87-90 LB9 T5's and L98's (it was standard in 90 on all L98's). It added dual cats and the better gears.
90 was a very short year too, as the 1990 Camaro model year ended on December 31, 1989. The Dodge Daytona picked up the IROC moniker until 93. No G92 90 IROC will have t-tops. 85-87 IROC's had the decal at the front of the doors, 88-90's had it to the rear. 85's didn't have a 3rd brake light, 86's have it on the hatch, and 87-90's have it in the spoiler. 90 IROC's have an airbag and upgraded instrument cluster. 85-87 wheels are single grooved, 88-90's are double. Convertibles were all 305's.
There are many more details, but that's the gyst of the IROC. The torque of a TPI car is a challenge through the 1/8 mile, so light to light, you might find a well tuned one keeping up. Too bad there were so many crappy engines available though. That is why the IROC has a super slow stigma. It also doesn't help that white trash filth bags can get their hands on one very easily as well. They don't take care of them, and many do worthless mods that hinder the performance even further. Many even take the TPI off and throw on a carb. These POS's humans think taking a 14 second fuel injected car to a 16 second carbed car is WAY better
Nonetheless, I love IROC's!
I miss mine!
