My First Run With a C6
I'll just give you the cliff notes now: 30-95 (approx) run, and when we had to brake for traffic up ahead, my front end was at his door handle, so technically I lost by about half a car.
Now for the details (and my excuses)
Last night, just driving along, and I see a set of HID's coming up on me, low to the ground. Just as I suspected, it was a new C6 Corvette. I shot him a few revs and goosed it a little bit to let him know I wanted to play. To my surprise, he bit and floored it! Typically, the Vette owners in this sleepy little town are older and never want to bite.
Unfortunately, traffic just never cleared up so we never got a good run on this street past 65-70. It was just a little cat and mouse/back and forth action.
I get to an intersection and have to make a left hand turn, the Vette is right behind me and he also has to make a left hand turn. At this particular intersection, there are actually TWO left hand turn lanes. I'm in the right one and the Corvette pulls up beside me in the left lane. The road we are about to turn on has no traffic, so it would be perfect for a quick run. So I shoot him a few revs to let him know.
The light turns green and we both take off rather rapidly and make our left hand turns. He is in the left lane (inside lane) and I wasn't trying to get crazy so when we finally got out of our turn and pointed strait he was slightly ahead of me. The front of my car was at his mirrors. That's when he just hit it. SON OF A BITCH! But I was in gear and ready to go, so I reacted quickly and also floored it.
Despite him getting the hit, I stayed right there. This is the unfortunate part. I was expecting to at least creep on him a little. But no. It was just dead nuts even. No one was budging.
Than I ****ed up.
I guess I was thinking about it too much, perhaps I was in shock that my car wasn't performing the way I had hoped. I don't know, but when it came time for my 2-3 shift, I ****ed it all up. I ended up shifting way to early (afraid I was gonna tap the rev limiter and really blow it) and quite honestly, the speed of my shift was less than perfect.
That's all it took. He pulled just a little bit more and now my front end was about at his doors/rear tires. Once I got into third it was still the same. No one was pulling away or gaining. All of a sudden he let out at approximatley 95mph because of traffic up ahead. So technically this is a loss for me, and I'm a little butthurt about it.
The guy turned off right after he hit the brakes and made a turn down a side road, so I never got a chance to talk to him and see what the story was on his car.
It sounded real good when he was in it. I've heard a few stock Corvettes at WOT, and they do sound good, but this one was a bit louder than normal. I'm guessing it had a catback. He was a younger guy (probably early 30's) so it's possible this car was modded. Intakes are very common on those cars and go hand in hand with a catback. But what I really wanted to know was if it was an LS3 or a LS2 model.
I hope to GOD it was not a bone stock LS2, or I'll be really dissapointed with myself, my car, and my driving. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a stellar driver, but I would bet money that I could gain ground on a bone stock LS2 Corvette. Maybe it's my pride talking, but I really doubt that was his setup. If it was a LS3 Vette with light bolt-ons, than the outcome would be much more believable for me. Sooooo, just to help me sleep better at night, I'm going to go ahead and say it was a light bolt-on LS3 Corvette. LOL! I saw the guy later that night cruising around (just going the opposite direction) about to play with a nice sounding Fox Body. So, it's apparent that he drives his car and isn't afraid to do damage. That gives me hope that it has some mods, and also gives me hope that in the future I'll be able to see him again and can 1. ask what his setup is and 2. get a clean/fair race that actually goes north of 120.
My mods: Ported Eaton, 2.93 pulley, basic bolt-ons, suspension and supporting mods.

CAI + tune will net almost 400+ rwhp on the LS3s, maybe 370-380ish on the LS2. They also only weigh ~3200 lbs. Cat-backs usually do ****all on the ls motor for adding power. Have you dyno'd yours yet?
I wouldn't do a 120+ race. Vettes are gearing fairly well for it as well as being very aerodynamic.

It was probably an LS3. The exhaust you heard was probably the NPP option(similar to Z06 bi mode) unless it had rather large tips, if so it was a catback. You can tell by the rims if it was an LS3 or not. Did it have thin 5 spokes, 10 spokes, or thick 5 spokes? Also, I would think twice about trying to race above 120 with a C6, at least mine tends to really like 4th gear.
What's your car trap? I would be less worried about beating other cars on the street and more worried what my car is capable of on the track.

He posted this over at SVTP.com and it ended up being an LS2 (as he found out) with most likely, cai, headers and tune. Having had an 03 Cobra with the same mods and a C6 that has gone through the mods, an LS2 with cai, headers and tune is the equal or slightly better than the Cobra with his mods (at least from a roll I think). Port the Eaton and it's back to the Cobra.
