Default 98' T/A vs 04'GT

On my way home lastnight from work I get on the freeway and I see a stang pass by me as I'm merging into traffic. I stay back for a second to get a feel for what I'm gonna be up against. I see that it has it's exhaust dumps. Now I know he's not stock. We pace eachother for about three miles cause there's traffic everywhere. We finally merge onto a different expressway and I moved over to the fast lane where there were no cars for as far as we could see. I down shift into 3rd to initiate tbe race. I bump the throttle a couple of time and he takes off. I floor the car in 3rd and start gaining but not as I expected. We started at 65 or so. Next run was at the same speed but this time I didn't down shift and left it in drive. The car pulled like a freight train this time. I pulled easily away and put literally at least a 4cars on him from 65-125.We parted ways after that.

Good kills.

Did your car get a 2nd gear downshift or stay in third? It's amazing the difference that can make. I got beat by a damn new edge cobra (non 03-04) because the trans hung in 3rd from a 68-70 roll.

Changed my tune to downshift to 2nd up to 75mph and don't see that happening again anytime soon.

It went down to second gear and it was a 100% different race...he didn't look over with the same look as he did after ther first race.

That makes sense, top of second from a highway speed roll is decently fun. Bottom of third is like driving a Honda.

You need a nice tight stall converter, gets even better!

He means you need a big stall 3600 is good,to keep you in your powerband.Your rpm's wont drop when the trans automatically shifts gears.A must have if you want to race with an automatic transmission, different gears in the rear would also be useful, 3.73's ,3.90's,4.10's are pretty common and recommended choices.hope this helps.

An efficient high stall torque converter for the transmission will make it a whole new car from a stop and low roll, from a high roll like the posted race it will still make your car faster because it keeps the engine in it's powerband and they are lighter than stock.

It still locks so your highway fuel mileage stays the same as stock and if you drive it right your in town won't drop much, but it makes the car brutal out of the hole and from a low speed roll.

Should be the number 1 mod for any automatic with performance in mind

My car didn't, some do but it's just tweaks to shift points. Most don't from what I've seen.
