I only know because I've raced my buddy's 2006 WRX with an STI turbo swap and he told me his has the 2.5.
Also, I murdered a pre-2006 WRX with a bunch of bolt-ons and when I asked him what plans he had for it, he told me he wanted to sell it and get a 2006

Ok
WRX non STI
02-05 2 liter turbo (TINY)
06-08 2.5 liter turbo (still TINY TURBO)
09+ 2.5 turbo(same size but not twinscroll as STI)... actually faster than the STIs in a straight line
STIS
ALWAYS 2.5 block and also have better suspension as well as a 6 speed(actually slower but stronger)
My old Legacy GT was a 2.5 block turbo(bigger then pre 09 WRXs and smaller than STI) and at about 18psi I was makeing about 270-280whp and near or over 300ftlbs. In my 5speed that would net about(never tracked it) about a 13.2-5 1/4 mile run.
All this is just FYI as this person could have been making 40023932 HP and not known how to drive. But at 20PSI i HIGHLY doubt this person was breaking 350hp. Maybe 300.

Id rather have a EVO over a STI. Just so MUCH more potential in that car IMO.
Legacy GT over both of those for a DD. Onyl reason I let mine go was the wife and I work in the same building and she now has a MDX(carpool!)

If it was going to be a straight up daily driver I'd probably take the STI because I like the looks and interior better, but once you start modding it past very basic mods, then I agree on the Evo.

I used to ride in my boys evo 8 and the recaros were more than comfortable even on logner trips. But its interior was not as nice as a STI/LGT. But lets eb honest if ANY of us owned either it would be seeing mods. And the EVO is just a faster car once even just bolted(would NOT get a MR).
Worst part of a EVO and I thought my friend was joking until I drove one... OMG TURN RADIUS. Its like driving a box truck. No intersection seems big enough to allow for a u turn. Its just THAT bad.

I have an 06 STi so the interior is the blue and black get up, honestly it looks like a 4 year old took a box of crayons and decided the color. I love the car but i would prefer a G8 at this point.

My ex gf had an sti and I have an evo, as much as I like the evo and think it responds to mods better I think the sti is more comfortable all around. I wouldn't mind the hatch for a daily driver, or get another forester xt for a dd again...was a great stop light sleeper. Now I have a g8 gt as a daily, love the auto in traffic and off idle v8 power, the room, low cruising rpms at highway speed (main complaint of the evo) but it is rough in deep snow even with dedicated snow tires.
