Man o man, am I glad i found this one, first one too. I have to say that the " 1978" comment was so lame its not even funny. Can you really be that stupid...lol. The 1978 Trans Am, did not run any 18 second 1/4. 78 Being the last year they put the 400 4 speed in the T/A. The guy probally braked from 6 car lenghts ahead and your friend thought he won.
Then the comment on the WS6, WS has always existed from the day the T/A was made. If anyone can read, or is able to read, on a plate on the firewall it reads WS4.
Also they someone asked if they made 6 cyl firebirds...haha...they make 4!!! Its called the gas crisis of the 80's! Those were all mistakes besides the 89' Trams Am GTA which was a largly tuned high performance 6 cyl, which will give any 8 a run for its money.

If your only packing a catback...pray you can out drive him. Thats the only way you can pull it off. I had mods in sig plus ported heads, minus Cam and headers... I used to be take down most auto stock LS1 cars. M6 cars It was a tossup. Probably beating the driver most of the time. Trapped 103 on a horrible 60ft (was hoping for 105mph traps but the engine let go). Anyways... unless your car has been taken really good car of and is mechanically up to par to 'new' condition... your going to be stretching to hit 100+ traps. (Some stock LT1s did..some didnt) and frankly im not sure the added weight on his car is as much as you think.
All you can do is run him and see how you do. I say if your still ahead around 80..shutdown really fast and call it a win.. near stock lt1, he will be pulling past you before you see 100mph. Even if you hit his dead spot. LS1 cars are no joke for a stock LT1. Good Luck.

I'm not much on the whole GT subject but good luck "puttin him in his place" I have witnessed and also delivered several heartbreaks to the LT1 community but if you can get him to go from around 40 that will be you best bet........good luck

I'm assuming you are refering to the limited TTA(turbo trans am) of 89. And, it was not a GTA.

I think personally that with the fat mans' weight disadvantage you have a chance from a 35 or so roll. Maybe a dig till about 65ish or so. On a side note, I REALLY like how SDP(or whatever his name is) is getting hardcore owned on this post.!

I never heard of a GTA with a six banger. In fact, I have owned 3 GTAs in the past. All 350s. I do however recall the existence of the TTA (which was a pretty sweet ride back then).

Just an FYI the Pontiac 400 was available on 4spd cars in '79. This was the last year of the Poncho 400. The automatic cars had the 403 Olds motor (which was offered in '77-79). If the car is still sporting the original decals or has been properly restored the engine can be identified in '78-'79 by the shaker lettering (not sure about '77). "6.6 Litre" indicates the 403 Olds and "6.6 T/A" indicates the 400 Poncho.
