454 68 camaro vs 02 T/A
Well last night I got a phone call from one of my friends saying that he had a race for me. A 68 Camaro 454, th400, 4.10 gear. He told me where the guy lived and that he was at his house so after my g/f gets home from work we ride over there. They hang around a little while and we drive about 20 minutes to a pos place to race but I went with it. Uphill, with a curve in it. 3 lane road. So we line up, they watched for us to even out, and then another guy drops his arms. And we take off, we're side by side at first, both of us spinning so I let out to about half throttle so I wont' spin so hard and I start to pass him pretty fast, I hit 2nd and remain sideways but ahead, I hit 3rd and about that time im in the curve pedaling it still to keep from dieing and then when I round on out I open it back up and then I had traction, so I ran on until I was ***** deep in 4th I had probably a bus and a half by 120 and then I shut down. Not the most entertaining story but I had fun.

prc215s, ms4, fast 102, bolt ons, 410s. After we raced he kept talking about his tires and how he can't hook but everyone said I spint twice as far and I was even pedaling. He said it was the fastest small block he'd ever seen lol. He was definately broken hearted. Everyone there kept talking about how I was pedaling it and still pulling away hard but I had to, cold pavement, a up hill curve and et streets don't mix well.

Damn, it seems like every thread in SR&K involving a old school muscle car they always lose dramatically. I remember another thread not too long ago and a guy in a 4th gen raced a Chevelle with an F2 BBC and the Chevelle lost! When is someone gonna come across something like this and take an honorable death?

It won't take a blower like that ^^^. Nice kill op no doubt, but that 454 had to be a very mild setup at best. Ever ran your car at the track? Not taking away from your win at all.

Well yeah I know it wont take a 1000hp car thats likely running 8s, but you get what I mean. Every muscle car I see riding around is clean as hell looking like it could easily win a car show yet has an original 302 or 289 or the way-too-overused 350. I wish someone would come across a Larry Larson-like ride and tell how awesome it was. It just seems like the majority of people who build street legal muscle just drop a 290hp crate engine in and call it a day. I know theres some mean ones out there, just seems like they arent driven very often on the street if at all.

^^^ Oo really? With a mild cam and some decent heads out of any jegs/summit magazine under the sun a 454 can easily put down 500+rwhp and oo yea gobs of torque just slapped together.

Thats not the arguement here. Any properly set up motor can put down good power, but I agree that too many are just all show cruisers with glass packs. I raced a 68 427 that sounded like it shook the earth at GLD, the vid should be floating around Tech still, if not its on youtube... He even tried to cool off my tires at the line by staging slow. I destroyed him with a 11.9 run. But at the end of the day, his car looked and sounded better than mine.
The other side of it is the drivers... Most arent used to beating on their show cars, and thus cant drive em worth a damn in racing situations.
If all else fails, anything can happen on the street comes to mind.

I'm talking factory production truck heads from the mid 80s with a random cam and the shiniest carb they can find....I've seen it all too many times. Sounds like an old log truck and runs just as hard.

Don't mean to thread hijack, but heres a local guy I know with a terminator racing two pretty nasty muscle cars. The second run with the chevelle is ******* bad ***. Love the short gearing of the 4 speed!

His car runs 12.40s. I had my car before the FAST and a dyno tune at the track on street tires and it went 12.6 at 118 pretty well spinning to the 1/8th. I know his car ran off 110 or whatever octane because it smelled like a nascar track. I don't think the car was set up like it should though. I thought it would be alot closer. The car looked like brand new though. It was definately a nice car. Looked like brand new. they're no way I'd race that thing if it had been mine. Garage queen.
