Flat slides would be a waste on a relatively low HP/low RPM/street V4... Not to mention learning to ride it with the quirks of them... They can be made to run "streetable" but.... they never ride as nice/easy as CV carbs. Your best bet is to leave the VFR alone, keep it well maintained and just enjoy riding a nice/stock vintage bike. If you want to build something for street racing/power, start with a newer platform.

As for flatslides, Last set I had was a set of FCR 41s on a ZX11 with an 1109 kit/Muzzy head/cams. It made 155 rwhp which for its day was pretty stout(late 90s).... The FCR 41s gained it 10hp over the 40mm CV Keihins.

My buddy had a 1255cc ZX11 with a Super Bike Mike billet block, Mike Lazer head and custom cams, that one made 180 rwhp with FCR 41s. It only made 155 hp with the 40mm CV Keihins... That was worth spending $1200 for carbs. This was a $10k motor.

For performance? NO... You will be in the same boat with the newer VFR.... They are great all around bikes and very reliable, but they will never make good power and they are heavy.....

As much as I hate to say this.... for the best power/performance etc etc, you will have to step up to a liter bike of your choice.... I really hate to have the same thing as everyone else but...you can't argue with the power to weight ratios and the availability of good power making components.

Personally I am a Suzuki fan so I would likely go with the GSXR1000, get a used one, you can pick up an 07-08 for pennies on the dollar and they are a great platform to start with.

If you want to buy one that is ready to go and is already at the top of the heap, pick up a BMW S1000RR ... They are expensive though. The 2012s are having rod bolt problems so stick with the 2011s.

ZX10s are also great performers, although a bit harder to work on with its frame design. The 2012 ZX10s are pretty nasty, they are stronger/lighter then 2012 GSXR1000s. Stay away from R1s after 07, the Cross Plane motors in the 08s and up are turds...

I guess I just hate having the same thing that everyone else can run out and buy, that is why I have just stuck with my old junk.... Now they are so old they are "different"...lol

I have kind of wanted a new bike for the last 5 years but....I just never see anything that "jumps out" at me for everything I am looking for in a scoot... The S1000RR is the closest thing I would want but they are just too much $$$...

This is my favorite GSXR of all time, its just a little weak compared to new stuff.... Although I still manage to squeeze 9.80s@141 out of this ole dynosaur.... Someday I may do something with it performance wise, but I enjoy its stock-ness and 100% reliable... I'd have to spend $5k+ on a motor to make it run with a new S1000RR that has a warranty...and I would still be stuck with old tech suspension, brakes, FI, no traction control etc etc..Likely not as reliable and maybe still not as fast.

I just use it as my touring bike/commuter/general debauchery and use this one VVV to hurt feelings with when I need to...

Sorry to take over your car vs bike thread....

This is exactly how I feel. That's why I picked up my bike. I just wish I could get more power. Even with FI and "VTEC" on that vfr800 it'll be just as quick as my bike?

I saw the 1000RR because its RWB just like mine... hahaha. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Swap a newer motor into it. I have no idea if that's reasonably possible, but it would make people's heads explode, lol.

You "could" do this on a late model VFR800 but.....probably not worth the effort and definitely not the price.... But...to be different..sometimes its worth it.

I recently sold this one.... It was the Team Hammer road race bike I posted about... It had NEVER been street licensed until I got it in 2010.... Rebuilt it back to its original glory....rode for a summer then sold it for a nice profit. Yes its an odd looking sucker....early 90s vintage... It had a lot of factory super bike parts on it and tons of one off stuff.... Half of the 1991 Yoshimura Speed parts catalog was on this thing.. It placed 2nd in the 1991 Road Atlanta 750 SS race, then it was retired. Pretty neat piece of history.. It was fun as hell to ride but slower then ****...even with its 116rwhp (I think it was really more like 80rwhp)

Here was my old 1109cc ZX11... This bike was pretty damn fast back in its day(late 90s) but the busa came out and JUST edged out my old ZX11.... once people started modding the busas, i got spanked so it had to go..

I still like the old ones... Too me they just look better, there is actually a full bodied girl under ya...

Took it for a test ride after she told me "he raced it all the time when he was here and put alot of money into it". Figuring it was just a pipe/K&N stage 3 deal I went for a ride. Wholly Christ that thing nearly killed me. And at the time I was racing my a GSXR750 and my 250 Ninja in in various classes at the track. But that so-called 700cc bike scared the **** out of me, let me tell you!

Made his mom call him to find out what had been done but he got elusive and would only divulge a engine swap that was a bored/stroked/heads/cams build. Told him to tell his mom to not let ANYBODY ride it on a test ride until they have cash in hand! I still regret not buying it, but I was looking for a corner carver, not a 1/4 mile king.

the old bikes were no joke.. i had built a bunch of old gsxr750/1100's and a couple 7/11's.. once you get the jetting right there was no holding those bastards back.. im sure the old suspension and brakes made the bikes feel faster but they deff werent slouches.

i built my old 96 zx9r with web cams, ignition advance,FCR's etc.. i must say that was my fav bike by far. it was a highway beast! soon as u got into cool air and that ramair got going the bike would just keep pulling.. and pulling for days

2008 dyno shootout (I won). Pause it and read, it gives a really good indication of where bikes stand. The CBR1000's are a early 2000's and 2008, both piped/tuned. ZX10 is a well modded 2005, turbo 750 was a early 80's bike that only made 125? 145? rwhp.

No I'm south of Houston. I only race at Royal Purple raceway, Lonestar Motorsports raceway and occassionally Houston motorsports park.

I only race the 1000 a few times every couple years... I have maybe 60 passes on it since Ive owned it since 07. I normally just ride it at stock height and hit twisties/road trips etc..

It still makes "OK" power for an ole dynosaur... (2001). Most new liter bikes are making 15hp more then mine (with my pipe/tune)

I'd love it to make about 40hp more just to keep me ahead of the new literbikes.... maybe someday I'll sneak a snail up under the fairings...

Dyno charts from this ole turd....

Pump gas, 14-15 psi..

C16, 29 psi

One with a boost controller mishap....(noticed we shut it down very early at 8700)

Not sure how much boost it was but it pegged my boost gauge at 30 psi by 8500 rpms before we realized something was wrong and chopped the throttle...LOL Turbo just ran away...

It will run 8.60s-8.80s on pump gas, low boost and relatively short wheel base (61.5"). I ran 225.906 mph at the Texas Mile at only 16 psi boost (ran out of gearing to turn the boost up more)....Been running since April 09... I just keep beating her and she keeps on going..

Built it all in my garage, tuned it myself.

Yes 434hp on 29lbs shutting it off about 1200rpms early..(Dyno would trip out once the roller hit 200mph so we had to stop the pulls short on the high boost runs.

The hero pull was 474hp at only 8800 rpms when the turbo went out of control. It would have broke 500 EASY if it held together...

Honestly I have never even rode it at over 18 psi...(360hp)... That's plenty..it will wheelie in 4th at 360hp pretty tall highway gearing..
