Actually, it is really incredible how far advanced this ZR1 was for the time.
Amazing.
I wonder what GM would have been able to do with the DOHC motor if they continued with it.

^^ There was a local guy near me with a black ZR1 way back when. He had the LT5 built. Had aftermarket cams, Ported intake, Full exhaust, and I can't remember what else. But the sound it made, was AWESOME! Most everyone was scared to run him at the time. Just a Radical car!

415ci LT5 normally aspirated by these guys can yield 673hp. This is what the C7 ZR1 should be running.

I think AES had 450 cui they could do, had to be expensive back then. Wonder what the heads would flow if developed for the bigger liners, I think stock they were a little better than 243's stock...

I'm sure they could have done wonders but it would not have helped sales enough at the time to make it wise. Ford, Dodge, GM, or any other manufacturer can get the technology from various race teams and or other engineers from other manufacturers. There really aren't many secrets or loyalty in the business world. Most of the bad decisions made are by bean counters, not the folks with performance passion.

The Ls series was cheaper to produce and made the same power and lighter. It's not rocket appliances

Maybe what GM could have done is just keep this DOHC motor for the Vette only and then use their LS Series motors for their other line of cars or trucks.

It would have not been because of a performance difference since LS motors make great power for their size but more to distinguish the Vette from the Camaro line and do more experimentation with a DOHC motor in terms of a small displacement, high rpms and FI.

Just saying, it could have been a selling point.

Stock. But when it came time to mod the LT5 blows the LS1 and LS6 away. The LT5 head can flow well done up. LPE used to get some crazy flow numbers with them

When it comes to rare GM stuff. It's not always about HP to $$. You can't just go out and buy a new C4 ZR1. Almost any Knuckle Dragger on here can run 10's with alot less money. For Collectors and Enthusiasts is a diff ballgame.

With stock LS1 and LS6 heads HiHo and Ballpien Hammer.

We have two head cam LT5s here at work with extrude honed intakes owned by employees. In cool air they have gone high 10s on drag radials. There is a white one running around converted to auto with exhaust and tune that runs high 11s at 117.

I don't doubt they can be very potent. Just not sold that they'd be better than the Ls. If they continued to develop it? Maybe

Dont quote me 100% but i remember reading an old article way back in the day( i forgot what magazine) but when gm tested and compared the chevy dohc vs the ohv motor at the time everyone chose to go with the ohv as it was faster and the instant torque.
