2000 Camaro SS vs. 04 Mustang Cobra
Went out to Irwindale Speedway last night for a little test and tune on the 1/8 mile strip. The car was running very consistant all night long in the 7.5x@94mph range.
Last night was the first night out with the new set up. 231/237 TSP Camshaft, Meziere Race EWP, power steering removed, Harlan 2-Step, and a few other Misc mods. Check Signature for complete list.
Toward the end of the night I pulled back into the staging lanes right behind an '04 Cobra Mustang. I had actually met the driver months back when the car was brand new. He watched my last run which was 7.518@94.17 and commented how close our two cars were. His last run was 7.52@94.6x.
After talking to him for a few minutes I found out his mods were an upgraded supercharger, 8.8" solid rear axel, M/T ET Streets, and a few other misc things. Basically both cars were very evenly matched. We both agreed to a friendly grudge match.
Due to a wreck we finally got to the burn out box about an hour later, and burn out we did. The announcer yells into the microphone "CIG ALERT 605 FREEWAY!!!" We both smoked the tires so much a cloud of smoke hovered over the 605 freeway. I am in the left lane, Mustang in the right lane.
I put the car into 1st gear, clicked the button for the 2-step and prestaged. The Mustang prestages. The Mustang lights up the second bulb and I follow quickly after. I mashed the throttle and let the 2-step bring the car up to 5000rpm. Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, Side step the clutch and we're off.
The crappy ET Streets rip the front end off the ground and 20' later start to spin. I adjusted left slightly and kept the car as strait as I could. 6800rpm comes really quick and I stab the clutch and I rip it into second gear. 6800rpm comes quick once again and I rip it into 3rd. Seven and a half seconds later it is over. We were nose and nose the whole way down the track.
We both got off the track and the Mustang pulls up next to me. I yelled "TO CLOSE TO CALL?!?!?!" The driver of the Mustang yells back "NOW THAT IS RACING!!!!"
We both start down the return lane to pick up our time slips. The driver of the Mustang grabs his time slip and pulls off to the right hand side. I grab my time slip and it reads....
Camaro
R/T - .520
60' - 1.71x
1/8 - 7.52x
MPH - 93.9xmph
Mustang
R/T - .544
60' - 1.68x
1/8 - 7.51x
MPH - 94.3x
Left Lane 1st .018
I won on a hole shot! It was an awesome race. From the launch to the finish line no one could predict a winner. According to a friend of mine at the track, the crowd was on their feet for the end of the race.
The driver of the Mustang is a former F-Body owner and if he is on this board I wanted to say thanks for a great race, that was a lot of fun.

If we both had equal reaction times I would have lost the race. He had a better 60' time, better 1/8 ET, and better MPH. I got the car moving a fraction of a second faster and that was all it took.
MeentSS02, that 2-step is deffinately worth the wait and the price paid. Especially if you plan on bracket racing in the future. You don't have to stare at the tach to make sure you have your launch RPM correct. You can concentrate on the tree.

If my reaction time was say .530 I would have only had a .014 advantage at the beginning of the race and would have lost by .004.
I hope I am explaining this well. Its even tough for me to comprehend the difference when you are talking about hundreths of a second.

Oh wait I see, you have your last digits Xed out. 7.52x ti 7.51x Take the difference from those numbers and put in the .024 lead you had and that would come out to .018.
Good race. Wonder what would have happened in the 1/4.

We're getting a set of 28x9 ET drags for the begining of next year. I ran a used set of those tires about 4 or 5 months ago when the car was stock internal. They hooked so well I was only getting 1.7 60' out of those tires but side stepping the clutch at 6000rpm. Just not enough horsepower and they would bog at 18psi.
The car deffinately has enough horsepower for those tires now and they should hook really well.

sounds like an awesome race. now its time for your own poweradder
also, i dont know if you realise it or not, but reaction time has nothing to do with ET or mph. you do get to the end first, but not necissarily by driving the faster car.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I do plan on adding nitrous spring time next year. Will be a Tax Return Nitrous System.
Of course Reaction Time has nothing to do with the ET or MPH. ET only measures the amount of time it takes to get from start to finish after the car is moving. It does not count the ammount of time you sat there after the light turns green.
This might help the "hole shot" explaination a little better....
Car 1 Runs a 7.50@94mph
Car 2 Runs a 6.50@104mph
Both Cars have a perfect .500 Reaction Time
Car 2 is capable of getting to the finish line 1.00 second faster than car 1. Neither car has the advantage of a head start due to a better reaction time, or "Hole Shot." Car 2 wins by 1 second.
Now winning due to reaction time.....
Car 1 has a .500 Reaction time
Car 2 has a 2.50 Reaction time
Car 2 is capable of getting to the finish line 1.00 second faster than Car 1, but Car 1 had a 2.00 second advatange due to a better reaction time or "Hole Shot." Car 1 wins by 1.00 second.
