FEBRUARY 24, 2003, 8:50PM, Update - An Edcouch-Elsa teenager is killed in a freak accident overnight. Weslaco DPS troopers say the collision happened on FM 2812, near Monte Alto.

In all, three cars and eight victims were involved.

Troopers say a group of people were drag racing on the highway when one of the drivers lost control of his car and plowed into a parked car. That sparked a chain reaction.

19-year old Jennifer Ybarra was walking along the side of the road when she was struck and killed by one of the cars.

"In my opinion as a State Trooper and as an experienced police officer. I can safely say that this is a result of folks congregating preparing for drag racing," says trooper Hector Montemayor.

Montemayor says investigators found chalk lines on the road indicating the start and finish lines of the race.

He says the investigation continues and its possible the drivers will be charged.

definatly a tragic accident! My sorrows go out to the family's and friends. But it's not going to stop. Its so hard to point at certain people, its a way of life and life goes on. Yes it should be more organized but its not. And as long as there are muscle cars then there will always be street racing.

Sounds like the off-road rally championships with like the wrx's and ford focus's and **** going hardcore off-road. The people just sit on the sides of the road where the racer could totally get loose and run into people. People are just so stupid sometimes
