Default 97 cobra

my friend tells me he knows a guy with a stock '97 mustang cobra. anyways, we go up to his work and i ask if he wants to run. he says sure. so we get on the hwy rolling in mid 2nd. i motion him to punch it so he does. after he hits it i hit it and by high 3rd i pass him then put a car on him by 4th. then had to shut it down do to traffic. those cars are kinda potent, caught me off guard. anyways, it couldnt handle the ls1 3rd gear tho. hehe. oh yea, my car is stock besides cutout, airlid, free mods, and nittos.

Ok, 98 was the first year that SVT actually increased the power of the Mustang. A 97 Cobra should be dynoing about the same as a 97 GT.

the 97 GT's were rated at 225flhp and the cobras were 305flhp

It's probably putting anywhere from 250-260 to the wheels on average (stock).

WTF! hahaha what a joke, six months ago the SVT page had them rated at 240 and now they are up at 305. Screw numbers, I'll give you the lowdown from experience. I've run alot of Cobras from that era, almost all of them modded, and I have yet to have one come within 2 lengths (I was stock). You're gonna smoke him.

On a side note, the 03 Cobra is the first of the recent Mustangs to dyno anywhere near claimed HP.

Hmm.

Here's how I remember the factory ratings, and I'll stand corrected if someone can document my errors:

'93 Cobra - 235 hp (5.0)
'94-'95 Cobra - 240 hp (5.0)
'96-'98 Cobra - 305 hp (4.6 dohc)
'99, '01 Cobra - 320 hp (4.6 dohc - optimistic for '99's)
'03 Cobra - does anyone here not remember that one?

God, and to think things like THIS outsold our cars. Way to go GM marketing dept!!

Aw HELL, that ain't the worst of it, Ash! What about the Mustangs in a Z-28's price class?

'87-'93 5.0 GT/LX - 225hp (downrated to 205 later in the cycle with no mechanical changes)

'94-'95 5.0 GT/GTS - 215 hp
'96-'98 4.6 GT - 215 hp (possibly uprated to 225 by '98)
'99-current 4.6 GT - 260 hp

From the LT1's git-go in '93, the GT's power deficit ranged from 60 to 70 hp. In '98, with the advent of LS1's in F-bodies, the gap opened to 80 or 90. Even by the time Ford finally got the power up to a level for which there was some flimsy excuse in '99, Mustang GT's were still at a 45-50 hp disadvantage - and we haven't even started with the torque! Is it any wonder more than a few of us here are defectors?

But I think there's a bit more than GM's suck-*** marketing to blame here. The 4th-gen F-bodies are cold, confining, and forbidding. If you're tall, that bunker-slit windshield races right at you as if it wants to take off your head. From my very first second in the seat, the car told me in no uncertain terms who was going to be adapting to whom.

But I knew what I wanted and stuck around for the payoff. I was tired of getting my *** handed to me, and I've always liked the way the 4th-gens looked. But less committed buyers, buyers with less focused priorities, buyers who could have swung either way, probably found the similarly less-focused Mustang more inviting.

Our old 98 Black cobra went 13.4 @106 mph on the OEM BFG comp T/As. The only mods were flowmaster mufflers.

Seems that their weren't to many 96-98 cobras that ran mid 13s, most were in the 13.8-14.4 range. We bought the 98 brand new and had Flowmaster American Thunder 2 chamber mufflers installed on the stock exhaust. The best we could must was a 13.9@101mph with a 2.1 60 ft on nitto DR. At 31,000 the engine spun a bearing while coming down the exit ramp off a freeway. The cobra was flatbeded to Mullinax Ford EAST in Wickliffe Oh. They ordered a new engine(shortblock, I think). They called us a couple days later and said the trans was making noise and the rear also and that they were ordering a new trans and replacing the rear posi and gears under warranty (I never heard any noise). After we picked the car up we drove it for about 730 miles, giving it plenty of break-in. The first time I jumped on it, I knew something was wrong. I couldn't even get a bark while speedshifting, and my buds 98 GT was out running us. i took the Cobra back and they had it for another day. They said there was something unplugged and it wouldn't allow full power....whatever that could be is beyond me. Anyhow, I bought new Cobra R rims with BFG Comp T/A tires(I really like those tires, those are what came originally on the car, to bad they discontinued them)245-45zr-17 x 4. We took the car to the track with the only mods being: mufflers, and a pro-5.0 shifter. That night, WED. NIGHT GRUDGE RACING, there was no track glueing or prep just blow off the dirt and thats it. I believe that was about the 3 week in JULY in 2000. WE ran 3 passes: 13.58@104. 13.51@105 and 13.4@106 with a best 60 ft of 2.13. Two of our friends had 98 Cobras too, both were blue and neither one could do better then a 13.8@101. I don't know what was up with our Cobra but it sure ran good with the new engine. i seriously doubt the Ford Dealership did any mods to the new engine. I think if we had a slick and a harder launch we could have ran 13.2-13.1, maybe better. The way that car was running, my SS wasn't really any faster or quicker from a dig until we hit about 110 or so, then the SS would begin to pull.

The reason why Mustangs outsold F-bodys was because they were easier to live with day to day. And look at how many 6 cylinders were sold compared to V8s. Most Fbody owners I know have V8s. Its the opposite with the Mustangs.

Dr Evil, I'm a bit confused about what your point is?
The bs was directed at the 13.4 time. You are trying to verify that time by saying you consistantly ran .4 to .7 seconds slower?
Or are you saying it is normal to get 4 tenths out of a flowmaster.

I heard that there was a recall on the stang engines due to hp ratings. They were dynoing about 100 hp less than advertised and the owners got pissed and complained about it to Ford. Now, apper. they did engine swaps to meet adver. hp. Sounds like something Ford would due to keep relations good but i think they will bust in the near future like Chrys. almost did!
