Default ok wtf is with my car??

Last night i raced a friend of mine from my work. He has a stock 05 altima, and i have a 98 z28 a4 w/ slowmaster, hypertech, and a filter.(all on it when i bought the car) We went a coulpe times from about a 50-60 mph roll and i pulled away everytime, but we truned around and went from about a 30 mph roll and i gave the 3 honks and he immediatly pulled 2 cars on me. My car was in 2nd and when i stomped it, it wouldnt drop back down into first. As the car got back into the power band it started picking up, and i slowly started to reel him in. I ended up flying by him at about 110 and gaining, and i know he didnt let off cause i asked him when we were done and he said he had the thing floored.

Shouldnt my camaro just pull away from any mph, and btw we couldnt go from a stop because every light we rolled up on we werent in front. Im pretty sure if my car dropped back down or if we went from a stop i would of pulled on him, am i right?

Yes you would have if you would have been in first. You hit the dreaded dead spot on the A4 and didnt have enough to pull it out. Let me say that Altimas are no slouch either though and I could see this happening if the Camaro was caught in that spot on the tranny.

**EDIT**

Oh yeah dump the Flowmaster and youll gain power. Also if you dont have a gear then drop the Hypertech as well, or atleast put the tuning part of it back to stock. Ive seen that cause issues with these cars dropping hp.

Yep...you hit the dead spot. Get yourself a 3,500rpm stall converter.

No, when i race my 5.0 and am lazy and leave it in the dead spot SUPRISINGLY slow cars hang for a few seconds till it spins up to the meaty part of the powerband.

Thanks guys i appreciate it, im glad i caught back up to him so i didnt completely lose. I was amazed when he jumped up 2 cars that quick, i heard that the hypertech is a problem too, as far as controling shift points and gear change

I had that problem awhile back when I was nearly stock, and wouldn't pay attention to my speed when I gunned it. There is an easy fix to this... go from a dig.

Are the 2.73's bad from 30mph?

I drive a 97 Camaro V6 with 3.08's and it SLAMS up to 5k at exactly 30.

35 or higher an it won't though.

Dan:

EDIT: meant 35mph.

A4s are fast cars but from a roll they suddenly become dogs if you're beyond dropping into 1st gear. anywhere from a 30-55 roll is a deadspot. Get a 3000ish stall and you'll still be streetable but you'll take off at any speed.

thanks guys, ive been having a problem when it wants to shift from either 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th. It wont shift itll just act like it hit the limiter but if i let out then stomp it again itll get into a new gear and take off again
I dont know if it finally shifts into OD or it drops itself back down again, i know once its in that new gear it still pulls hard so i doubt its OD

I agree about the Altima....my commuter is a 3.5L 6-speed Maxima....and it goes!!

OK, I just installed the HyperTech this weekend....no gear and is a 6MT....so its bascially installed for the spark and fuel tuning. So you are saying this is NO GOOD? Is this the consensus? I did get it for free

Ill tell you that I tested it at the track and lost .2 and .5 mph with it in but that could be differences in the run alone. With it installed the car would never go faster than it would with it out. I also do believe that everyone on here will tell you that the "Power Tuning" isnt worth having on your car.

I punched my car at 30 once and nothing happened... at all. The worst part was I was trying to impress my friend on his first ride. I immediately shut down when it pulled like my last POS car and went back and did things the right way (from 25.)

He soon forgot how much it sucked from 30. This was from a 3.23, i dunno how it is with 2.73s

I think I also hit a weak spot when racing with a G35, it's not a slow car by any means, but it took my TA wayyy too long to pass him. I thought my car was a turd.

I have an A4, with a 273 gear in my car. If I stomp it from 25-30, It will slam you back in the seat, but from 35-55 it's almost like the car is sitting still untill it starts to pass 3 grand and picks up in the RPM.

Yeah, i have that issue with my 5.0 feels like a mirror of the LS1 powerband, DEAD below 3500 I have been pulled by CRAP when im in the wrong gear (one night my speedo went on the blink and i didnt know what to shift into (not a pro yet) and got pulled by 2 cars until i got into my powerband by a new intrepid, then i just blew by him).

I had the exact same thing happen with our A4 with 3.23's when i was racing an SRT-4 with the boost turned up and a few other small mods. We hit it about 35mph i think and he was stuck at my door till 110mph i honestly thought the TA was a POS for awhile after that hahaha. The SRT wasn't no slouch it ran really good but i was like WTF that took way to long to hand him his ***. After we got past about 110mph i easily walked him but i was scared for a min.

In my mustang i never really notice a deadspot

Nah they should be great. I've got 2.73 rear on a STOCK car and it will kickdown to 1st at anything below 40mph. so 39mph is a real sweet spot. In fact it'll even spin the wheels with the TCS activated at this speed, although it's much more fun with it switched off.

MonsterZ28 do you know what final drive ratio you are running?

Have to say, I've never driven a 3.23 geared car, but all this talk about dead spot sounds like the 2.73 gears are better for road use.

Yes I know it may not have quite as much pull in gear. But I don't really have to worry about the dreaded dead spot anywhere near as much. Plus it will top nearly 55mph in 1st, and will run up just past 155mph in 3rd.

But yeah I 2nd the idea of getting a stall. Have a word with the guys at Yank Convertors (a sponsor ---->) they'll help you out.

I had 2.73 and A4 LT1 and had a dead spot that made me sell the car, lmao. Seriously though. IT was 30-60 that was my dead spot (I liked to baby the tranny/have a little gear to run out when it DID kick down).

yeah I don't know. Maybe the LT1 responded differently. I guess the kickdown points may have been programmed different because of course the LT1 makes PEAK torque much lower in the rpms.

Whereas with the LS1 and 2.73 at 39mph if it kicks down to 1st it brings you in right at the PEAK torque of 4400rpm.
