Default 99SS vs Modded VR4

Today I ran into two guys in a dark green 3000GT VR4, it had some guages and some loud exhaust (for a V6). Anyhow, he rolled up and we took off from a stop, he seemed to bog and I proceded to put 10 cars on him throguh 2nd gear and shut down. I guess he had let off, so we come up to the next sign and the same thing happens

At the next sign i asked what he had and he told me it dynoed 420AWHP and he wanted to get out on the freeway. I agree and we roll out to 59. We did a 60 roll (I was in 3rd) and I pretty much killed him. Then we did 50 (I was in 2nd ), this was just ugly, Im talking 10 cars+. So I am not sure it was a 420hp car, lol. But it was a VR4, and seemed to be modded. Anyhow, not much of a race, but a kill is a kill.

Its prabably one of those guys that has a VR4 with 3 mods, and he thinks he's getting 20 hp from each mod.

420RWHP? I doubt it.

Nice Runs.

How much HP does a VR4 have stock?

Couldn't be no more than 300 ona cocunt of being a V6.

He should've invested in turbos, it's the only thing that really can save a GTO. Besides an engine swap.

I think it's around 320, same as a Supra. Well the hell would an AWD car wanna race from a roll?

I believe thay are right around 300hp stock. They are very heavy though so maybe it put down 420awhp on race gas or something.

This guy definitely did not put down 420 at the wheels.

Depends on the year. All the VR-4s had a twin turbo 3.0L V6; '91-'93 were rated at 300HP and '94-'99 were rated at 320HP. They're cool cars, but they're pigs at 4000lbs. I would definitely have considered buying one instead of the Z28 if they weren't so heavy. They look awesome!

This race sounds about right if the VR4 was stock. 1st gens have 300 advertised horsepower at the crank and usually put down arond 240-250 to the wheels. The drivetrain sucks up horsepower like there's no tomorrow unfortunately. The 2nd gens come with a tad more boost (12 PSI) from the factory and are rated at 320 so they put down around 260-270. One thing for sure and I think everyone here already realizes it is that the 420 AWHP claim from the VR4 owner was a buch of crap. It'll take well over 500 to the crank to put down that kind of power to the wheels and then the car will trap 120 or so in the 1/4 mile. Yes, they're heavy stock, ~3800 pounds depending on which model so that kinda does put a damper on things. I'm embarassed for this VR4 owner. It's guys like him that give legitimate 420 AWHP 3/S owners a bad name.

yep, as a former vr4 owner I can attest to the fact that it doesn't sound like anywhere near 420 at the wheels. Sounds more like 420 from a good stick of stankbud, lol. To get 420 at the wheels he would need a good-sized turbo swap, fuel injectors, supra fuel pump, and a monitoring system to make sure he wasn't knocking like the IRS after a tax-evader.

And for the record, a vr4 can whoop some pretty major ***, and only weighs 200 lbs. more than a f-body. They can give anybody a good race if properly done.

the vr4 are no slouches. and with a boost controller can gain sginifigant amount of hp upping the boost. and unlike the STI/EVOs they do not hurt real bad up top. their kinda unique. im guessing they have taller gears than normal awd cars.

Sprayed, my comment was aimed at the fact that the guy had a nice car but was a dick about HOW nice it was...I hate ppl who bullshit. Ignorance is one thing, bullshit is another. And he seemed full of it. GTO's are nice cars though and CAN be made very fast.
