Default Got a date with an evo 8 tomorrow

One of my friends just got a new evo 8 and its slightly modded. I'm just wondering what I should expect, its an 03 with a turboback exhaust, boost controller running 21lbs, new clutch,CAI, and an ECU reflash. Still on the stock turbo though

I'm a 98 Firebird Formula w/ headers, ory, ported TB, catback, lid, k&n , smooth bellows and poly motor mounts. A4 w/ stock converter and a 3.23 rearend. I think we will be racing from like a 55mph roll. Its supposed to be happening tomorrow so this isnt just bench racing, we have had a bit of a import vs domestic rivalry ever since we bought our cars

With it being from a roll, it takes out his AWD advantage. So I am going to go with you, mostly b/c I really don't like those cars and hope to read about you winning, so you better or else
Edit: What psi do they run stock?

18lbs stock i think

edit: Even from a dig I think he wouldnt have much of an advantage, he needs a major !driver mod. He missed 2nd twice, and 3rd once when he took me for a ride in it

From a roll you should beat him pretty easily.

I had the same mods on my '03 last year and ran a 12.3@108. The '03's had the least amount of power of all the models and without cams the car wont pull that hard up top. The stock boost is 19.7. Let us know how it turns out but without cams on his part I'd put my money on you

Kind of OT, but, Yesterday I was at my local drag strip, and there was an Evo 8, maybe 9 or whatever, but it ran a 11.8....fast...

But that has to definatly be one of the better 4 cylinders I have heard...

It may be closer than you think given that you're an auto. You have him covered in power, but your gearing and weight may make things more even. If he nailed every gear, I still think you would edge him out though. Get some vid

no results and almost midnight? hopefully no body got emabarrassed... j/k
i raced a stock evo 8 (had to be stock) yestarday on my way home from work. he was in front of my at a stop light, and i figured he was going to mash it out of the hole (the lanes merged from 3 to two just up ahead). well, light goes green and nothing. he limps it to 10-15 mph, then kinda looks at me in his rear view and nails it. i let him get a good 2 cars out so were not bumper to bumper and i mash it. well, by the end of first ive stopped his pull, and gained about 1/2-1 car length back, and then 1/2 way through second i had to let off so that i didnt bump into his back bumper. car was quick nonetheless. i tried to give him the thumbs up at the next light, but he just ignored me.

Evo guys - how hard are evo's to launch hard enough to take advantage of the awd? I'm thinking if they went from a dig this guy would probably bog?

A lot of people say that if they go frum roll he'll be ok, but Im thinking he should fair pretty well from a stop as well. What do yous think?

They take some practice to launch good. Most people who dont know what they are doing either launch to low and bog or launch to high, dump the clutch, and either blow something up or just roast the tires.

For a good launch you need at least 5000 rpm, I have a 2-step set at 5800. You then have to quickly slip the clutch out while flooring it. Doing this will keep the stress off the tranny and give you just enough wheelspin to keep from breaking parts. There are several people that have pulled sub 1.6 60ft's on stock tires with this method.

Unless he has cams he would be better off going from a dig if he can drive.

Well I pretty much went through 1 clutch learning to launch my Evo but after I got it down, I cant remember one car that got me off the line even if they were on DR's or other awd cars. Its not that difficult NIevo hit it on the head thats how I launched mine, I would typically launch at 55-5800 or so, but I hated having launch control I had it set at 6K and at 5 K and I had it removed.

It takes practice to get the launch down. I personally like launching my AWD car at 4,750rpm with a little boost - 10psi or so. It comes out of the hole nicely and I don't find myself hitting the 8,500rpm limiter too quickly before the shift.

On a roll, it's hard to beat a decently powered A4 unless you have substantially more power in my experience.
