Look at a stock graph, hp peaks out round 5200rpms. Yes you should take it lil more than 5.2k, I think I actually take mine closer to 5.7k (went out tonight and played to see). Taking it to much farther than that will put you out of the peak of the powerband.
I don't know how long you've had your f-body for and if you ever taken it to the track, but I've owned 2 f-bodies in the past 2 years or so and taken them to the track more than once... so I'm not talking out of my ***, all of my posts are based on the experience that I've had... you can keep on arguing, but I would stop and listen if I were you.
If your shift point are any different than the ones I described above, you don't have 3.42's.

As far as I know it's stock firehawk gear ratios... which i'm pretty sure are 3.42's, but i cant exactly test out anything right now with al the ******* ice... so i'll just take a vid with the fone(tape it to the dash were you can see the tach and speedo) and run it through 5th...

BUAHAH, I talked about my G/F a little bit, tried to go with a little different style of writing this time, but I guess it was a little weird for some of the people that read it....
You would of smoked him alot earlier if you started in 2nd. I would NEVER race anyone with my g.f. in the car. Most of my races I only take up to like 80-100. I care too much about her. Besides she has a big milatary family..

I'm sure you would have destroyed him had you started in a lower gear and shifted at around ~6000RPM. The LS1 is all about top end, and by starting out in too high of a gear and shifting too early, you're at a big disadvantage.
You beat him either way, but for future reference make sure you start out in the powerband and keep it there
