How fast are '85 IROC's?
I'm going to race this guy I work with tomorrow who keeps bragging that his car can get past me on the strip. I saw it, looks like ****, mostly stock, but has no smog equipment. He said he has slicks, 4.11's M5. People at work are starting to bet on this race. My best so far is 13.1 @ 111mph with street tires. Do you think I have anything to worry about? I don't want to lose to a $2,300 car

i think back in the 80s the speedometer went up to like 85 mph or something. lol.
but all jokes aside i'm sure it goes faster than that, it'll just take him a while.
lol ok no more jokes on old school 3rd gens. assuming he's still got the same motor in there it came with, i'm sure you'll pull him pretty quickly.

If it's an '85, I beleive that would have to be a 305ci. I don't think they even offered the 350 in '85; hell I'm not even sure if you could get the TPI motor in '85 for the F-body. It's probably a TBI 305.
If the motor is stock, and all he's got is 4.11s and slicks, you will pull away so hard that you'll suck the paint off his car. You're probably trapping 15-20mph faster than a TBI 305, assuming that's the motor still in his car. You never know what sort of mods he might be hiding though (like N2O).

His car probably really feels fast as Hell with those gears and that engine in the M5. That's probably why he thinks it's so fast. I'd race him in a heartbeat if I were you.
Someone eles that knows more than me can chime in, but I doubt that M5 is going to support enough power to take a 13.1-second car. I'd bet those 4.11's in a stock rear won't last long in a sub-13-second car either!
He's either got one hell of a super sleeper (and I mean stealth like no other), or he's got a car that's a second or more slower than you. But, I bet it feels way faster!

If he ONLY has 4.11s and slicks w/the M5 he is a mid to high 14 at best. Is it a TPI car or an L69? The L69 was the carbed H.O. 305. If it's a TPI car with 4.11s he's shooting himself in the foot because the gears will keep the revs up high and the TPI chokes at about 4300-4500 RPM.

Thanks for the support guys. And I think the fact that it FEELS fast to him is a really good point due to the gears. He says its a 350, I took a look at it but I don't think I can tell the difference between a 305 and a 350. But I DO know its carbed.

They never made a 350 with a M5. I had one of the best Irocs in my opinion 1990 305 TPI with a 5 speed and the G92 package. Either this guys has his head up his butt or he is not stock. On the other hand I will run my Iroc against you. It is stock too.

the tbi looks like a carb to the untrained eye, and if he did carb it and remove the tbi, then there must be some eprom work done to it if the cpu is in the car. check that out.

i drove an 89 with a 305 before. stock it was pretty lazy to me. i agree it feels faster than it really is to him...or hes really got something else in there...doubtful.
either way, i cant stand people like that...they just dont want to be realistic. take him to the track and shut him up.

My 86 had TPI, but my buddies 85 had TBI (looks like a carb, as mentioned above). The 5.7/350 didn't come out until 87/88 in the camaros, but no telling what he has in there now. THe 3.8 4th had as much power as the 5.0/305's back then. THe 5.7 TPIs in my 88 was only rated at 245. so you should be able to take him.
I can't see him having much more power over a stock 305 and still running the 5 speed. 5 speeds were never offered with 350's, only on the 305's because the 350 had too much power for them.
You should be able to take this guy. lower your rear tire pressue a bit to like 25 psi so you can grab (test out the driving like this, don't just do it the day of the race). Maybe take a little more weight out (spare tire, rear seats?).

well, he obviously knows **** about camaros and just assumes its a 350, hell ask him what the cubic inches are on ur car and if he says 350 then he is full of ****. i had an 86 IROC and as stated above, the car did FEEL faster but i used to get walked by bolton foxbodys all day! I would see if he will let u go for a ride with him and butter him up and play into it like u really think he will ***-rape u and then when its all said and done show him this thread so he can see what a dumbass he is. My IROC was a bolt-on car and i raced a WS6 LS1 once at a light and he put BUSSLENGTHS on me, then he said all he had was catback, so thier ya go.
