Eh...

My friend with a A4 LS1 T/A with 4.10 gears, redneck style true dual exhaust, and I dunno what else ran 12.8@108mph I believe. Not bad I would say. I was driving it one night and got spanked by a 300ZX though.

You definately need gears. 4.10s were not too much for his car at all. Infact I would have never guessed that car had 4.10s in it. It would roast the tires from a dead stop clear through 2nd though.

MPH is actually a very bad guage as to how quick someone is in the quarter mile. I'm running in the 120 mph range but there are cars with lower ET's at about 3-5 lower mph's. There are a few LSx trucks running 10's around here and they're almost 8-10 mph slower than cars running the same times.
Horsepower will get you MPH while torque will get you ET's.

1/8th mile x 1.56 = 1/4.
