I was driving to pick up my girlfriend who had an appointment to be somewhere so I was already in a bit of a rush. I pulled up at a light beside a Mercedes convertible with an AMG emblem and the top down. It wasn’t brand new, but was fairly new; perhaps mid-late 90’s. I decided to pussyfoot it off the line and then punch it if he went. I think I ended up getting to around 3500 rpm in first before I punched it. (Can’t remember if I just got impatient and jumped him or if he tried to jump me and then I followed… I’ve kinda tried to tune this experience out. lol) Anyway, when I shifted into second I pulled ahead slightly. Nearing the top of second he was about to pass me so I decided to put it into third. I shift. He blows by me and puts about five or six car lengths on me. What the hell? My car is not that slow. I then realized that I was in FIFTH gear.

Yeah, you read the last sentence of the last paragraph right. Fifth gear.I didn’t bother putting it into third because this thing was pretty much over. My turn was coming up and I didn’t have time to catch up to him before that. If I had caught up it would have been just ended up being a flyby anyway. I stayed on it in fifth and began to barely reel him in a bit, but who knows, he could have been easing up by then and probably was.

Having to swallow your pride sucks. As much as I hate the lack of feeling you have over the car and the amount of extra braking you have to do, I think I am going to stick to a turbo Regal or something else that has an automatic transmission for my next car. When I am pussyfooting it around trying to save gas, I’m fine with an M6. But when it’s time to go fast, a lot of mistakes creep in. Case in point, going from 2nd to 5th. Please tell me you’ve heard of someone else doing that before?

 

LOL oh man Steve WHAT THE **** MAN,get a pro 5.0 shifter to help with the driver mod...and you know you KNOW you will never see him again for a rematch

Done that a few times in the Viper..Made the other guys feel like the **** as they zipped by..

Yeah the other day I was laughing about how could anyone miss 2nd gear, and then not 5 minutes later I miss 2nd gear against a mustang GT lol.

I've never missed 3rd when i've been in a race, but I have missed it just going WOT by myself.... knock on wood

 

Feel your pain man with the stock hurst shifter I couldn't find third if my life depended on it. I got a Lou's Short Stick on there and I haven't had a problem since.
