Default Wow, top end - Evo story

Hey everyone.

A friend of mine has an '00 Camaro LS1 with headers-back, lid, and tune putting out 333rwhp on a DynoJet.

I sport an '06 Lancer Evo IX with turbo-back, cone filter, boost control, and tune. Undyno'd, but should be approx 330whp based on other Evos.

We did various pulls and various starting speeds last night, and I must say... mucho respect for the LS1. Top end power compared to my car is like a sick joke on me.

10mph > 110mph ... Camaro fishtails every time from 1st gear. Needs better tires. (or a better driver, lol)
20mph > 120mph ... Evo pulls and maintains 1.0 car length
30mph > 130mph ... Evo pulls and maintains 0.5 car length
40mph > 140mph ... Evo pulls 0.5 car length, then closed by 140 ... Tie
50mph > 150mph ... Evo pulls for 2-3 seconds, then waves bye bye to the Camaro who is 1.0 car length up at 150mph

Definitely made me want to get cams and a big turbo. Anyways, at least I'll have him beat at the 1/4 mi

Evo's are great... Free ECU editing program called ECUFlash (www.openecu.org), an $80 cable, and a $150 wideband.

I tuned my own car and used on road dyno estimates that put approx 330whp, but since I haven't been on a real dyno, I don't claim any numbers.

We have some vids, I'll get them ASAP

Positive, although you have an EBC which gives you more top end torque than me.

I've raced many EVO's; stock and larger aftermarket turbos. So far my torque has put them to shame. You're right about traction problems in 1st gear though. It takes a lot of practice to learn how much throttle you can give before it becomes a burn-out contest in a rear wheel drive car.

"The most significant change is added power. Mitsubishi increased output to 286 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque."
"We doubt the power increase will be realized in any significant acceleration performance gains. In fact, we'll predict another 13.3-second quarter mile at just more than 100 mph."
http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/ro..._ix/index.html

"With the Evo IX MR, we saw 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 104 mph"
http://www.caranddriver.com/previews...lution-ix.html

Oh my, now I'm afraid... He, he, he

Cybernco, the IX uses MIVEC Variable Valve Timing to create quicker low end torque and more top end power, compared to the Evo VIII.

The BHP output of the engine is marginably higher (~10hp) but the MIVEC plus other small improvements bring the WHP output up about ~30whp. It also allows tuners to be a little more aggressive and get even more low end torque and top end power by adjusting the stock timings.

Even still... I've got nothing on an LS1 past 130mph

I'm going to say he meant the tuning made a huge difference in the performance of the Evo. I think it's great we have such a variety of people on here, as long as we respect each other, anyway.

You are right. It's great that we've got a variety of cars represented here now. I hope the "Ribbing" that we do, doesn't cause anyone to take it personal.

My car is a normally asperated daily driver that runs 12.1 @ 114 MPH in the quarter, so teasing the 13 second car owners is my own fun. But, I sure realize that there's a heck of a lot of cars out there, of many different makes and models, that're running quicker times than mine. I just haven't ran into one on the street yet. But, then again, look at where I live...

Thaigleshmk is the LS1 owner I was racing in the OP.

We raced before I self-tuned my car, and his Camaro pulled 4 lengths with no problem. So he's just complimenting my tuning skills
