Default Raced a 98 Mustang GT ... was suprised

On my way out to do some camping last weekend I came across a 98 Mustang GT it had the 4.6 according to the badges and said mustang gt on the rear bumper the driver was probably in his mid to late 30's, I had a buddy riding with me the t-tops out and windows down with some camping gear in the backseat. Well I got next to him and kept asking what he had, all he said was your gonna be faster. We go from a 60 roll and I let him get the jump, he got out maybe half a car with my front bumper at his door and by 95-110 he's at my back bumper wasn't really paying to much attention to the speed but it's somewhere around there that I let out. I was really surprised he kept up that close I thought the 4.6 2v is a dog and the ls1 has a good top end, weather was mid to high 90s and pretty humid, I'd also been driving in stop and go traffic for the last 30 minutes before racing. Anyway thats my story comments are welcome, was this outcome it should have been? His exhaust didn't sound that loud, but it was hard to hear anything over the wind and my exhaust

Sounds right with your passenger and tops out. You shoulda been still pullin right? Tops out are killer drag at 70+, I about spun out going 120 with the tops out once. I felt the rear end wiggle from the pressure in the hatch.

That is odd. I highly doubt he was stock. Either that, or you had a few 100 pounds of camping gear. The added weight, plus the drag at those speeds, I can see it being close to a modded GT.

Nice of you to run a 'dawg' though...LOL. Most LS guys wouldnt' have given him the chance.

I dont know, I can see that outcome happening. I raced a buddies 99 GT with full bolt ons(shorties,xpipe,catback,cai,4.56's,tune,etc.) with my A4 SS with the tops off. From a 45 punch we were dead even all the way to 100 when I had to let off because if the crazy drag I was getting with tops off. I was just starting to pull on him too. We both had about a 200 1b. passenger as well.

The 96-98 mustang gt's have the non-pi heads and are the slowest production mustang ever built imo. Even if he was highly moded, without the PI swap he wouldn't stand a chance. You must have been weighed down pretty good with that gear?

I disagree....weight and wind drag. The GT had some things for sure...but I don't think the PI swap.

The 96-98 motors were dogs. My buddy ran a 14.7 e/t in an a4 when he was stock, and that's considered good for those cars. I'd say PI swap.

I just know what camping gear, drag co-effi, second passenger would do. That is alot of resistance against that fbod. I know the SN95s are dawgs....but I just would think he would have had other mods cause I can see a nose to nose race with a pi swap.

Not at all... they aren't even CLOSE to the slowest Mustangs built. I think you're forgetting the 60s...and the 70s... and the early-mid 80s. A bolt-on/geared 96-98 with just the PI intake swapped over could definitely be responsible for the race you had, imo.

LOL, I actually was neck and neck with my friends 96 mustang GT with my mom's 02 mercury sable LS, from a roll. Just for the hell of it i ran the sable at the 1/8 mile and ran a 10.2@ 69 as opposed to his mustang 9.59 @ 72 lol.

I then raced him with my LS1 when I first got it, I was able to stay neck and neck with him at 1/4 throttle. Then we did a real race(dead stop) and he held me off til i got traction then i blew by him like he was standin still, i thought he let off.

I raced him from a 50 roll and it was so bad i couldn't fathom that this Mustang GT was actually a performance car...lol

either your car is running bad or he had some pretty serious mods, you should have literally beat him by 10+ cars if he was stock....

^^^ Sorry, with all that weight (camping gear, psger) and drag from windows and T-tops......I just can't see this GT having serious mods. added weight increases drag co-efficiency.

But, none of us will know for sure.

Yeah, those t-tops out will get you at high speeds. I almost lost control in a straight line with mine out. Course not having a sway bar didn't help things either. All that pressure can make the car do funny things

A PI swapped car with full bolt-ons is nearing the 290rwhp range, which would not yield a race like the one here... maybe a PI swapped car with exhaust only?

you have full bolt-ons and PI heads and cams stock and you make 260 rwhp....so where the hell do you come up with 290 rwhp???? no ******* way in hell......I am a mustang guy as well as LS1, i have had 3 stangs, my last one is in my avatar '03 GT M5 and it was full bolt on w/ 4.10's and DR's and it ran 9.00s-9.10's in the 1/8, that is ******* SLOW AS HELL, my stock A4 formula ran 8.30's with the paper filter and stock radials, a 6 speed LS1 would put TRAIN LENGTHS on a non-pi stang......I have also had a '96 stang(non-pi) full bolt-ons with 3.73's and I would get destroyed by stock LS1's......
