My car does that when I push the cigarette lighter in, the energy and heat generated by the coils powers my canooter valve into starship mode...but this only happens on a full moon, or so the apache chief said.....

VTEC is a nice system IMHO. Overrated by fanboys (which the OP is definitely NOT), but nice.

It simply allows the engine to use a more aggressive valve timing profile at higher revs. So you get nice streetable cam feel and economy down low, and aggressive cam airflow up high.

Virtually everyone uses some system to acomplish this nowadays. S197s use VVT, the new Viper uses it (and the new one will run circles around the old up top). Imagine a car with a stock cam down low and a 228ish up top or something. Pretty cool.

Yeah, but that's more than enough to surprise an unsuspecting (or even an expecting) LS1 GTO driver... Maybe not in an equal-driver/perfect-situation case, but how many of those do we actually see in the real world?

I agree 100% I have always liked the concept. I just don’t like the fanboys that worship them.

I've drove a Toyota Avalon with the 3.0 V6 with VVT-i(Toyota speak for VTEC) for a long time. Not impressed at all. Absolutely no torque or power until the hotter cam kicks in. Makes that big car feel like a slug since you have no low end torque. Have to spin the motor up to 4k(basically floor it and wait for the slow tranny to downshift) to get any power, then the tranny shifts 600rpm short of redline, killing the fun.

Drove a Buick Park Ave with the regular 3.8 V6, felt a lot quicker and torquier(and you could actually spin the tires as well), and it was a bigger, heavier car.

My Car At the time 2001 Acura CL Type S 3.2L V6 260Hp Stock.... Had headers, k&n filter... 18inch rims, slotted and drilled rotors, and keep in mind its an auto matic. ( I thought at the time this was a good transition from the Trans Am, I had 8 points on the liscence and needed to slow down)

His Car 5.7L Black GTO, loud exhause and 18inch rims, never stayed around to find out what else he had but looked nice and sounded louder than a cat back would normally sound.

Anyways roll off the freeway and hear him punch it so for the hell of it I do the same , manually shifting the auto to rev a little higher in VTEC..

Oddly enough I am keeping up with him, 1st gear pulling , 2 gear start to gain some ground, and 3rd gear actually pass him, not I top in 3rd at about 110pmh so it was over from there 4 has no ***** and he of course having a 6 speed V8 started to pull, but I had him to 110...

Being 2am and no one on the road , ran a few more times from 1st gear roll and beat him each time to 110, I turn around to go home and he follows, wants to run again and again, mean while the Acura is in need of a rest I pull in to my drive way....

Big black dude pops out of the GTO comes towards the car ( While I reach for my glock 40 cal thinking he is going to murder me) asks what I had in it, told him and he couldnt beleive it ...

He either has no idea what he is doing or my car was running freakishly fast that night, either way would never have guessed a 3.2L V6 could out run a 5.7L V8 ...

I know what you mean. I once had a white guy approach my car at 1am, I thought he was gonna eat me.

It's not even fair trying to compare a 3.0 Avalon to a 3.2CL just because they both have variable valve timing... the CL would put a raping on the Avalon

Yeah... but you still only brought up the Avalon cuz it has variable valve timing. Have you ever driven a 3.2CL (or TL) Type S?
