but i am still surprised at how much power the M3's german designed inline 6 puts out, and the high rpm's, and bealive it or not the torque is not that bad at all, it still peels the tires into 3rd!! 333hp from a I6 is ausome

from the bmw site...
"Produced in the same Landshut factory as the BMW Formula One engine, the M3's all-aluminum 4.0-liter V-8 produces 414 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of peak torque. This engine has a truly remarkable 8,400-RPM redline, "

Starting in the 08 model year yes. IIRC 4L V8 making 400hp.

The S52 engine is effective because it flows really well even at high RPM using some seriously trick features like variable cam timing and a throttle body for each cylinder to allow the intake manifold to be really effective.

Problem is, outside very expensive parts or FI, its already about as powerful as it can get right out of the box. I've seen big exhausts loose power on those cars.

Interestingly they run in the same class in the SCCA - T2. There have been some freak LS1s but the E46 M3s trap in the 105-107mph range, a few at 109mph.

It's really a fantastic car - practical, fast, great interior and good handling.

V6 Camaro needs 150 shot of NOS, not 75 to beat an E46....

The very first race in my WS6 (100% stock at the time) was against an 02 M3 from around a 15-20 roll. We were sitting at a light and it turned green...neither of us sure about racing and then we accelerated a little faster than normal, then around 20 he punched it and put about half a car length on me before i went WOT and simply WALKED past him up till about 70 or so until we hit traffic ahead of us...they are fast, but not fast enough

The new M3's that are coming out will be a different story (430bhp V8)

Also try the 2007 + bmw 335, with the latest tune they are 420hp and 450 tq at the flywheel. See if you can find one. Stock they are 300/300 but the twin turbo engine was detuned by bmw and is a tuners dream.

It responds well but 110-112mph trap speeds are tops w/ 93 octane tune - the stock turbos are just too small and any more will probably blow them.
