Default Killed my first AMG!!

Driving home around midnight tonight, and I hit a red light. A silver Mercedes pulls up, and gives me a nod. Its midnight, I'm really not thinking about racing. So I wave back, and think nothing of it. The light turns green, and I put in first and start going, and while doing so, he JUMPS like a bat outta hell and takes off.

"Hmmm, interesting", I think to myself.

Well, two lights later, and now I'm pulling up to him, and the back of the car says "CL 55 AMG". ******** I think to myself, I've had a couple different AMG's hand me my ***, so I'm a little worried. He looks over and gives me a smug "haha, punk" look... Ok, I'll play, just to let him know that I am willing to put his arrogance to the test, but not really expecting a win.

Light turns green, and we both kinda ease into it... and right when I consider the three honks (15/20mph?), he floors it... so do I.... By the time I shift into second I've put my door to his front bumper, and at the 2-3 shift he's seeing tail-lights. I let off at 100mph and hes a length or two or three behind me: truth be told, I'm not good at judging car-lengths really. I let off, since we're in a 45mph zone and it's obvious that he's not going to gain any ground.

Oddly enough, he motions to pull over, and we chat. His is a stock 02 CL55 AMG (I did the research, rated at 355hp and 391ft/lbs), and he was suprised he got beat. Cool enough guy though, we shook hands and exchanged names, talked cars for a second, and went on our ways.

So, I killed my first AMG. Given, it was 6 years old, and naturally aspirated, but I'll take an AMG kill in any form!

Nice kill. You definitely have a power and weight advantage over him. I love those AMGs, but with a rated 355/391, I wouldn't be too surprised to get beat on a regular basis knowing that the car is also pretty heavy.

I wasn't as surprised when he told me the model year of his car. The thing is they all look so relatively NEW to me that I keep forgetting the 2002 is in fact SIX years ago. AMG has come a long way since then. I think that in the 2005+ years, there is only one car in the AMG lineup that I could pose a challenge to (C32... but I think they discontinued them in exchange for the C55). The rest are North of 450hp I believe, and VERY well geared. I've had my *** handed to be by the CLS 55 AMG () and the S65 AMG... those cars are huge,, beautiful, and rediculously fast for their size/weight.

What gearing is in them? I always thought I'd have a decent gearing advantage (and I still think I do), but you make me wonder.

those s65 amg are damn fast. had an 08 s65 amg jumped me at the light instantly getting 2 car lengths with out me even touching the gas pedel. I pressed the gas pedel and he stayed 2 1/2 car lengths ahead of me till 100mph. i checked out the specs on the new s65 amg and they do the 1/4 mile low 12's about 118mph. damn quick

Good kill. The newer AMG's are nasty for sure but the older ones are not as potent.

Nice kill. I've had only 1 AMG kill so far. The almighty 2005 E55 AMG. 469hp & 516ft-lbs. Did 3 runs with him on I-270 around Columbus. First 2 pulls were in 4th gear from 60 to 110-115 dead even. So the 3rd Pull I dropped into 3rd and had him at my rear bumper at 115. Really cool guy. He was even the one who encited the race. I wasn't looking for a race.

I honestly have no idea, but my assumption is that they hafta be pretty well geared to get their heavy asses moving. I'll do some research and find out for ya.

Awesome!! I guess he was asking for it, eh? I think the E55's are nice, but the styling is a little too plain. Gimme a CLS 55 any day. They're switching over to "63" i think, instead of "55"... wonder what the specs on that monster will be, especially if its got a blower .

^^^ edit: I answered my own question. the new 63 motor is a 383ci, 514hp/465lb-tq Naturally Aspirated V8. If I had to spend 100k on a new sedan... It'd be that one!

Which AMG? The big coupe is a CL55 and supercharged, traps around 110-112mph roughly. The smaller CLK is the n/a motor, up to 107-109mph trap speeds.

I do not believe the big CL55 coupe ever had the N/A motor. EDIT - checking MT specs, apparently it did have the N/A motor early on.

Nice kill regardless.

MB/AMG have been moving away from FI to the new 6.3 NA for a couple years now, gradually phasing them in across model lines as they update the various platforms. Just this year they've put it in their smallest sedan, the C-Class, as a C63 with 450hp.

Congrats on the run with the CL!

Do they tune the 6.3 NA to different power levels? I'm seeing 450hp in the C63 (ridiculous, but awesome!), but 514hp in the CLS 63 AMG... Is the idea to make all the XX63 AMG cars about as fast as each other, so there is no real Halo Car?? Makes sense i suppose.

The 6.3 is "rated" differently according to class supposedly for minor exhaust/tuning differences. The jury still seems to be out though whether there is actually any significant power differences, as dyno tests (what few there are anyway) seem to come out pretty close across the board. MB is probably just playing the same game as other manufacturers by giving the higher priced iron a higher "number" on paper. Of all the 63 series AMG's, I wouldn't be the least surprised to see the new C63 being the fastest of the bunch, mainly because it is the lightest (for MB anyway *L*).
