Default E-Brake Positioning

After my axle swap about a month ago, I noticed that the e-brake shoes are rubbing the inside of the rotor drums. It was a pulsing rubbing, not constant. I tried to "adjust" the shoes but it didnt to jack, if not make it worse. They also seem to be a little loose, like able to move back and forth easily. The clips that hold them in are tight. I also adjusted the "nut" so it was at the lowest setting and it did jack squat. Anyone have a writeup or know what I can do to get my e-brake shoes centered? Thanks

I know that the "drums" inside my rear brakes are warped (yes, drums do warp). If you are getting a pulsing type rubbing, I am going to guess that you have a warped drum as well. I've never looked into having them turned (like a standard drum). I'm not sure if there are specs for turning them (minimum/maximum sizes that you can cut them to). I have a set of replacement rotors for the rear of my car in the garage and am waiting for my new brake pads to arrive before I change them (that's why I'm not trying to get mine turned). I'd suggest checking with your local machine shop to see if you can get the drums turned.

Just my experience.

Don't bet on that. I used to work at a parts store that turned rotors and I've had to clean up brand new ones, they are often warped when new. Cast iron has alot of internal stress and when it cools it often changes shape. I bet they have more warp in them than you think. If the were dragging constantly, they are not warped. If you are getting a pulsing type rubbing, something has to be out of round. If the drum is not warped, then they must be installed "crooked" due to a non-square hub (axle flange) or dirt/shavings under the drum.

My thoughts....

You need to position the emergency brake line holding bracket located on the rear lower control arm bracket so it is touching the control arm bracket. This will release the brakes by giving more line length. Vice grips works well to hold it against the LCA bracket while tightening bolt.

If this doesn't make sense I can send you a pic of mine positioned correctly.

Well I'll be damned...... The drums are warped, I took off the wheel and gave them a spin and they are wobbling like no other, maybe 1/8" - 3/16" of play..... Time for some I-Rotors

1/8"-3/16"! I don't think your wheel/tire would turn with the much warpage. With the wheel off the rotors are loose and free to wobble. You would have to clamp the rotor with a couple nuts with the wheel removed to hold the rotor in place.

I'm having a similar issue. I just replaced the rotors and pads and still have this pulsing / rubbing noise.

Ferocity02, did you figure it out?

I'm thinking about pulling the e-brake shoe out and seeing if the sound goes away. That way I can at least be sure I know the source of the problem. Anyone ever do this? Or could it be a be a bearing/axle problem.

I havent figured it out yet...... The symptoms dont seem to go together. The squeaking seems to go away while braking. It's not the wheel bearing, axle, or rotor.... I will have the dealer take a look at it tomarrow when they do the service.

Well I had them check out the rotor during the service. They said that it was casued by the aftermarket rotors and that is is "normal" which is bullsh*t. Maybe they saw that the drums were warped.... Or they didnt even bother to check it. I am ordering iRotors for the rear soon and maybe that will take car of it. I think the squeaking goes away when the e-brake is on. I've put it up while moving and it seemed to go away. Try this on your car and see what happens...
