Exclamation Shock mount issues?

I got a set of upper shock mounts for my strange coil over set up and I went to install the completed subframe yesterday and it seems as if the shock mounts are not even close to lining up to bolting to the body.

The driverside mount I can get 3 of the for bolts to line up and the passenger side I can only get the two studs to come through the body.

My question, is there a special procedure to get these things to mount up correctly? Such as bolting the mount end first and bending the assembly to bolt to the lower A-arm or something like that?

I was under the impression that these things where a direct fit type application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The quicker I can get this figured out the faster I can get it to the cage installer.

Thanks,

~Jim~

These are factory upper mounts, correct?
Are you sure the mounts on the correct side of the car?

They are not factory mounts they came from a sponsor here.I got the drivers side to bolt up after some forceful prying but the passenger side is still way out.

They are on the correct side. There isn't and changes in these parts /w years is there? I can't imagine there would be.

No changes, same mounts from 1993-2002.

What you need to do is first measure your lower spring seat jam nut location to a reference point lower on the shock body. then loosen the jam nut followed by lowering the spring seat until the spring has no tension on it. Now break loose the upper shock mount nut so you can rotate the upper mount. Use the lower shock mount wings position in relationship to the upper mount as a visual reference as to what position the upper shock mount nut should be tightened in . Now reinstall the assembly and then adjust the spring back up to the desired position and tighten the jam nut.

I follow your procedure but I'm lost on what the finished result will be. Can't I essentially get the same result by spinning (raising or lowering the shock body on the spring) to the left or right? Excuse my ignorance if I sound like a moron.

From what I'm noticing it doesnt seem to be an issue with the way the coil-over assembly mounts to the A-arm but just the mount it's self bolting to the body. I tried a few different things tring to line up the shock by itself sans the upper a arm assembly and it won't mount straight. Thats assembly loose by it's self and not attached to the lower a-arm.

I appreciate your help very much. Thank you.

what brand shock mounts do you have? this is really common with aftermarket upper shock mounts. Here's a recent thread about these things: https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...ut-mounts.html

For where you're at now it'll be hard to make something happen if things aren't all lining up. The tower holes are pretty tight around the studs and they don't allow the mount to move around much at all. If everything doesn't line right up when you put the studs through the tower it pretty much is what it is. Without wallowing out the holes in the tower for the bolts there's not much that can be done except try a different mount or drill out the threaded insert(s) and use a grade 8 nylock nut & bolt. I ended up knocking out the studs and drilling the threaded inserts out in the last pair of shock mounts I used and just used all bolts. Took a couple extra minutes to bolt them in but at least it was possible to actually get them bolted in.

Oh man that sucks. You'd think of all things that they would get right, the mounting portion of it would be #1

Thats exactly what I'm looking at right now. Either opening the holes on the mounting portion or try a different mount. I guess I'll have to go with a GM replacment then. Kinda sucks I hope I can recover some of the money I spent on these things. Pretty expensive paper weight.

Thanks for you're help guys.

UPDATE

I called the manufacturer and their measurements to not match the measurements on my car. Their mount is "off" by 1/8 inch. Pretty "off" if you ask me.

So my options have become GM replacement parts at a whopping $200 a mount. Luckily I have access to a discount. So that will knock that down to $120 a mount, still pretty pricey if you ask me.

Any whoo, thank you to those who replied and helped me out.

Thanks,

~Jim~

~Update~

I got the new mounts from the Chevy dealer and they fit perfectly. They did not give me any new hardware though which blows. Any one know what size the threads are on the hardware so I can work on replacing the hardware?

Thanks,

glad to hear the gm mounts still fit. the bolts are listed as M10x1.5x25. And the nuts would be a shouldered M10x1.5. listed as 8.8 class.

since I looked them up here are the Gm numbers for reference by anyone else that runs across this and might need the info.

The Gm numbers for the upper shock mount hardware are: (not cheap at dealership over the counter retail..)
(2) LH bolts (with the torx head..) 15548771
(2) RH bolts 11515510
(4) nuts 11517996 (this number used to be 10255857 and was superceded)

while I'm at it...
the upper shock mount part numbers are:
(1) LH 22146933
(1) RH 22146934

and the upper shock bolts (for the shock rod that comes up through the mount)
(2) 11517996 (this number used to be 11515604 and was superceded)

Thats great thanks for the info.

Where in the world did you come up with all those part numbers??

GM parts fit but like I said they are not cheap. the dealer sells them at $200 a piece luckily I got them for a lot less then that. (just under $300 for the 2 of them)

part number PDF's. very handy to have as a reference.

camaros http://performanceworks1.com/PDF%20F...s%20Manual.pdf

birds http://performanceworks1.com/PDF%20F...firebirdta.zip

some can be a little tough to read. I usually run the numbers through the gmpartcatalog website to make sure i have it right and check for superceded numbers.

Why not replace the stock style mount with a rod end or aftermarket bushing? A little cutting and welding is all you need to do.
