Upper shock mount replacment?

Upper shock mount replacment? I read somewere that you may need to replace this item to fix knocks and rattles in the front suspension. I need to be able to rule this out. before I just tighten the upper shock nut and put it back together only to have it still bump and knock driving down the road.
