Default control arm question

i am getting my x-mas list together for the wife. the control arms i want have the option to stay with the 12mm bolt or go to the 1/2" bolt. i know i will have to drill the brackets but 12mm and a 1/2" aren't all that different in size. the 12mm is a 10.8 grade metric bolt which is equal to the 8 grade SAE bolt. whats the advantage?

Hello
The hardware is 12mm from the factory and the difference is 28 thousandths of an inch and 14 thousandths on the side from a 1/2 in bolt. But both will work with the sleeves that UMI Performance use in our lower control arms. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I will be more than glad to help!
Thanks
Brad

^^^ brad if you sell the sleeve and both will work. you guys should just use 1/2" bolts

to the OP. i would stay with the 12mm. most other aftermarket arms are still 12mm.

We don't use the 1/2" bolts because the mounts on the vehicle need drilled out or reamed for the bolt... they are just slightly under .500"

what is the advantage of the 1/2'. is it stonger or equal to the 12mm? i dont mind drilling them if the 1/2 " is stronger.

^^^ it sounds hear that he is saying that they will exect both 1/2 and 12mm. why not just make your bushings to take 12mm?

The sleeving that we all use is sae sizing and the bolts are all metric from the manufacturer. Can't find metric tubing.

From a minor convenience standpoint I'd stick with the 12mm bolt. Every fastener (except the lug nuts) on these cars is metric. It's just easier to use one set of sockets instead of having to bonce between the two.

A 1/2" bolt is slighty larger than a 12mm so it would be stronger based on its size. But the 12mm 10.9 grade material is equal to a 1/2" grade 8 bolt.

Our controls will except both a 12mm bolt or a 1/2" bolt, the mounts on the car will not accept a 1/2" bolt with out drilling.

If both bolts are of the same grade, and made by the manufacture, with the same stock of raw material on the same bolt header, and have the same shoulder and head design, then the 1/2 inch would be stronger because it's OD is 0.7mm greater.

However, it's very rare for the above conditions to be met. Therefore, statistically, they are probably about the same.
