Default Rack and pinion leaking at the boot... do I need a boot or a whole rack?

The gentleman that aligned my car said I should go ahead and replace the whole rack and pinion, there is a tear in the boot and it is leaking from there.

He said the boot isn't made to hold fluid but to cover up the seals. I just wanted to get a second opinion on this.

Thanks

The boots are just "dust" boots. They are not supposed to hold fluid. The ends of the rack are leaking fluid into the boot. Ya need a rack.

Exactly.

Time for a new rack.

And make sure you get a good quality one, most of the autoparts store rebuilds are complete junk.

Yeah, like the others said, your rack is leaking. Mine does too, but I just add fluid every month or two

As long as the fluid leak isnt major you should be ok. I ran mine with a leak for the longest until the PS pump would barely hold fluid then I did mine and it was a PITA.
