Default Brake Rotor Question

So I did a quick look around on this particular forum and couldn't find this particular nugget of information.

What is the largest rotor that will fit a 17" rim and stock calipers?

Thanks in advance

Depends on if you have the caliper bolted in the stock location. If so, then stock sized.

If you relocated the caliper out with a C5 conversion bracket you can fit C5 fronts on there which are 12.6"

I don't think there are really any other options for stock calipers.

If you go C5's get a good set of pads for the track. You could also get a set of upgraded rotors, but they're going to have to be great.

So bottom line is: If I want bigger rotors I have to get bigger calipers too? Damn, I was under the impression that I could get bigger rotors whilst keeping the stock calipers...

You can, its just that you are limited to the C5 rotors which are 1 inch bigger than the stock LS1 rotors.

Just to make sure there is 100% alignment ...

With a caliper relocation bracket, you can use a stock F-car caliper or a C5 or a 2 piston C6 caliper on the C5 rotor. This will require a 17" wheel and your spare will not clear.

Without a relocation bracket, you can use a stock F-car caliper or a C5 caliper or a 2 piston C6 caliper on a stock F-car rotor. A 16" wheel will clear as will the spare.

Your pad choice needs to be based upon your rotor choice, regardless of which caliper you mate with it.

The raised "hat" portion of the rotor has a certain arc. The corresponding pad has a similar arc. You run the risk of the pad backing plate hitting the hat once the pad is worn down a bit.

I've been running a C5 Z06 caliper on F-Car rotors with F-car pads for several years. It iss a direct bolt-on. I just purchased a set of C6 calipers and plan on doing the same thing on another car.

The C5 rotor is 12.8", the LS1 f-body is 11.8", the LT1 f-body is 10.8"

I just bought a brand new set of C5 calipers today and I have an LT1. How much trouble is it for me to upgrade my brakes? What will I really need besides C5 pads and C5 Rotors?

I have the 16" stock rims right now, i guess I need to upgrade to 17" beforehand?

You will need a bracket that will allow you to bolt your C5 calipers to the stock location because the bolt position is wider than stock. UMI sells these as well as LG Motorsports.

If you are trying to run C5 rotors, yes, you will need 17'' rims. Some 17'' rims will still not work however, like my Torq Thrusts.

If you run the C5 rotors, you need to also run C5 pads as the curve of C5 pads will match the rotors. If you run stock pads with larger rotors the backing plate of the rotor can interfere with the hat of the rotor once the pad is worn down.

That's the extent of my knowledge.

Also, does anyone one know what kind of improved stopping power I will have just by upgrading rotor size, if any?

Slightly more torque, larger heat sink.. Hard to say if you would notice it.

Yeah I listed the C5 rotor incorrectly, it is basically 12.8". LS1 rotors are 11.9" (303mm) and LT1 fronts are 10.9" (278mm) though.

A better set of pads with the stock F-body rotors should be ok.
