Default general brake question

Is it better on ur brakes to push hard on the brakes, and slow down more rapidly, or light pressure and on them 2x-3x longer....im assuming lighter

I'm sure there is a happy medium, but I have heard that a shorter stopping distance will generate less heat, and thus less wear. I have nothing to substantiate this claim, however.

Brakes dissipate the car's energy as heat. If you stop quickly or slowly, the laws of physics dictate that the same amount of heat will be built up and dissipated by the brakes.

The heat cycling would be different between the two and the temperatures should be higher with faster braking. The forces on the brake/suspension components will also be greater.
