guys,
just out of curiosity im thinking about cutting my springs. im planing on getting lowering springs so if i dont like the cut ones its no big deal. i tried a search but my question is how dangerous is it to drive with cut springs other than a stiffer ride? i would cut with a grinding wheel also, not a torch.

Yes and no. Depends on the person doing the work. Be careful that the spring is unloaded and be careful not to hit the shock with the cutoff wheel. I like to take the entire assembly off the car, put it in a vice, compress the spring, and then do the chop.

 

yea i was planning on taking the spring off. you say do the chop when the spring is compressed in a vice...is that to reduce vibration when cutting?

 

why would you compress the spring THEN cut it....

OP, lift the car by the diff, prop with jack stands on the underbody, let rear drop. The springs will come out with a little effort. If they fall out, they were junk anyways... your shocks are likely going to take a **** on you since theyre probably intended for factory height (assuming your factory) Its gonna ride like ****, itll ride like runny **** if your shocks are already shot... Youll look good doing it though... My advice would be to go to autozone and get a couple of 30$ monroes and put on... theyll last a little while but will get you by until you can get a legit setup... I just did this to my buddys Camaro. It dropped him a little more than 2"


you can also do the heater hose mod... remove upper isolators.

 

If it is done right there is nothing wrong with it. Don't use heat on the spring though. You'll distort it.

This. There's nothing wrong with cutting springs. Grinder with a cutting disc or a chop saw, which is a little trickier to use being you can't secure the spring. Just don't cut to much off...

 

Not compressing it, just to hold it still.

also, do i NEED to replace my shocks if i cut a coil off? i know is recommended but would it hurt anything to ride on the stock shocks until i can afford some bilsteins or something? my shocks right now feel like theyre fine.

 

Should be alright on the stock shocks for a little while if you're just cutting one coil. The car would perform and ride better with a good aftermarket shock but the stockers aren't going to hurt anything for the time being

 

just finished cutting a coil off the fronts and back with the HH mod. it looks awesome and feels almost no different than the full stock spring just maybe a little stiffer. just wanted to share my excitement lol

How many inches did cutting one coil lower it? Also, what did you use to cut the coil? Thanks in advance.

 

I cut my rear springs along with the heater hose mod.

 

its more than fine to cut springs, hot rod guys have been doing this for years, lots of good tips given, be careful and take your time,
