How do I test the shock mounts when changing the shocks?

How do I test the shock mounts when changing the shocks? I am going to have my friend change my front and rear struts/shocks no springs ( I am smart enough to know I am not handy enough). How do i know if I need a mount?
Are there any tips I can read anywhere to make it as easy as possible? I do have a garage w/ air tools. Lol, thanks guys.
