Default Strut mount question

Having a issue where my car is clunking over bumps. It looks like the rod from the strut is moving up in the strut mount.

Does that mean the strut mount is bad, or the isolator? Shocks are KYB adjustable and are in pretty good condition, not rusted all to hell when we took the assembly out. The top of the strut rod is hitting the body of the car. What stops it from moving up and down inside of the strut mount?

thanks!

The only time I have ever run into this issue is when I was installing new Mevotech strut mounts on a car and after I finished up the install there was a clunking noise over bumps and you could literally press down on the front of the car and hear it. I ended up throwing in some Moog strut mounts and everything was good after that. My problem was the junky Mevotech strut mounts which were brand new and still made noise.

I would definitely look at the strut mounts because they are more than likely going to be the issue. I would pull everything apart and make sure the little isolator piece that sits on top of the strut mount is there and if it is I would suspect that you have a bad strut mount.

Ill get some mounts ordered up then. I had just never seen where the shock rod moves up into the mount and hits the car.

Can someone post a pic of a completed strut? It almost seems like my current struts may be assembled wrong.

What does the isolator part actually do?

The isolator dampers the road noise and stops the metal on metal contact.. its the rubber piece that seats in the shock mount.

It is metal also. Metal coated in rubber. It's main purpose is actually to spread the load on the mount, otherwise the mount will rip out. I've seen where those pieces have rusted through however and the shock has ripped through it, then through the mount.

Why they didn't just build the metal plate into the mount and make it all one piece I'm not really sure.

So the strut screws down to the strut mount and the isolator just chills on top, correct?

No... the isolator goes under the nut (and on top of the mount)... in the 2nd pic, his finger is pointing at the isolator.

The other piece you saw in the 1st pic is a rubber seal that goes on the upper a-arm bracket to seal the mount from water.

Without the isolator, the shock shaft can tear out the center of the mount.

I had good luck with the Moog mounts on mine. I paid $106.23 shipped for Moog shock mounts and isolators (bearing plate, whatever it's called) for both sides from Rockauto back in April.

The Moog strut mounts are really the only ones I use and recommend to everyone.

Rock Auto is definitely the best place to get these parts from.

OEM or Moog are the only quality strut mounts.
