Default Compressing Stock Springs

First time to do this. So I started compressing the springs with a compressor from Oreilys. How many coils do people normally try to compress? I have tried multiple times with 4-6 coils and can only get the bottom part of the spring to move. The top stays seated and never gets loose. Does it matter which orientation the compressors are in? I looked at ls1howto and saw they had the tightening mechanism near the top of the shock. Just looking for some pointers on getting this done!

Thanks

Just grab as many coils as possible and place the compressors 180 degrees apart. I placed the tightening mechanism towards the top of the shock as well but it shouldn't matter. I just did mine and they compressed just enough with the tool I was using.

If the bottom is moving then the spring is compressing. Are you running out of thread on the compressor?

I've got more thread left. I guess I need to just keep cranking on it.

How loose will the top be so that I know it's ok to remove the nut?
