Default Jeep bump stops - Drill, cut, or both?

Been doing some suspension work on the car and its time to replace the bumpstops. After some tech research, I went with the poly Energy Suspension Jeep stops. My car is lowered so the travel is already very limited. Some people seem to drill these poly stops so the impact isn't as abrupt and I have heard of people cutting them as well. What is the best method or both? How many holes to drill if I use this avenue?

I had a similar thread and didn't really get much solid information. I ended up just trimming out the bump stops to clear the factory lip (chose to modify the bumpstop and not the chassis) and bolted them in. I was absolutely hitting the OE stops on the OE springs/decarbons, but with my cut factory springs and my bilsteins I haven't hit the stops yet. If I do and they are way too harsh, I'll start drilling holes and see where I get.

If you cut them down shorter they'll hit a lot harder, I know I tried it years ago. I'd install them "as is" since their already about 1/2" shorter than the factory tapered V6 and Z28 bumpstops (not SS).

I found NOS 3rd gen stops. They hit at times but it beats flattening out cut stops

Really? Mine were identical in height to my black SS OE bumpstops (without the spacer though). If I threw the spacer on the OE, then yeah, they are 1/2" longer.

I forgot all about the harder stubby SS bumpstops.
Thanks for the correction!
FYI if you really want a smooth transition onto the bumpstops then you need to do a few modifications and go with shock mounted bumstops. This will work with the factory 10 bolt rear, and maybe a 12 bolt.

I found a set of used 3rd gen bumpstops on eBay, 100% direct swap and despite being many years older than my original bumpstops they still look new. The 3rd gen stops are made of a way better material than 4th gen stops.

IMO, if you're still running with the factory 10bolt rear I'd ditch the 1/2" spacers and enjoy a better ride quality.

I already had purchased the jeep bump stops prior to making this thread so I wasn't going to buy something different.

I ended up just cutting the inner fender lip to gain the extra 1/2" of travel:

Didn't cut or drill the bump stops. I've put about 100 miles on the car so far and can't tell any difference. Most likely because I don't think I've hit the stops yet.

My factory ss bump stops are falling off. I am looking for what to replace them with..

I am lowered and I think I am hitting since my bump stops are slightly rolled over/bent now.

Any suggestions on what to buy? Z28, Jeep, ss? I found some on ebay that fit 82-02 from hawks 3rd gen. They are urethane, not sure if they would work correctly or not. I live down the road from summit so if I could pick something up that would be cool too.

Thanks for the advice.

Don't go with the Hawks 3rd Gen, they use the same ES jeep bump stops(9-9137G or 9-9137R) that cost $18 a pair at Summit Racing.

Wow! Thank you, how do the jeep ones compare in height to the stock ss ones?

That is insanely cheap from Summit. Thanks so much.

They're 1-7/8" tall if that helps you.
You can modify the slp spacers to mount them, but it wont take any longer(probably less) to just cut the lips off bump-stop mounts.

I don't remember which ones I got, I ordered from Autozone. Got the black poly ones.

Anyway, they are the exact same height as my black SS bump stops. I didn't re-use the aluminum SS spacers, so I am now about 1/2" shorter than the stock SS assembly.

Obviously the spacer/lip issue is there, but if I am running a little bit shorter or longer on these what will happen?

Just curious, I don't know much about the bump stop adjustments and how they affect ride quality, comfort, performance, etc.

I will do whatever, just curious. Thanks!

It's not that there insanely cheap from Summit, it's that the Hawks 3rd Gen are insanely expensive!

Running the ES jeep bump stops without the 1/2" spacers is not a problem at all with the stock 10 bolt rear. You will definitely notice a smoother ride if you leave out the spacers on a lowered car when driving on less than perfect roads.

Ok that's good to hear. Anybody on here drill the ES bump stop with a lowered car and no spacer? Sorry...20 questions. Just want to get it right.
