I need Advice: Installing a rack and pinion
2001 Camaro SS Part #22-185 (O’reilly) which comes w/inner tie rods
Am I missing anything else? Any Advice? Thanks
- Keep the steering wheel straight.
- Put car up on jack stands and removed the wheels.
- Measure the distance that the old outer tie rods mount of the rack as close as possible for alignment purposes.
- Remove the outer tie rod ends from the spindles. (Recommendation is replacing your olds ones with new ones [Moog])
- Disconnect the steering couple from the rack's pinion located under a plastic cover (11mm).
- Remove the 2 power steering hoses from the rack using a line wrench on the nuts. (Be ready for fluid)
- The rack is mounted to the K member with 3 bolts with nuts. Driver side bolt remove with sawsaw and replace.
- Install the new rack and fill your power steering fluid.
- Bleed the system: by leaving the engine running and the front wheels in the air. Turn the steering wheel back and forth 20 times.
- Finally get an alignment

From someone who has done this before,
use seat belt to lock steering wheel in place (slide seat ALL the way forward)
unbolt tie rods from knock loose from knuckle
unbolt intermediate shaft from rack
unbolt 2 power steering hoses
unbolt the 2 bolts holding rack to k-member (cut bolts as needed to remove, watch for brake lines)
remove rack
reinstall using reverse of instructions.
tips:
install new steering rack bolts from bottom, unless you can get them in from the top
when doing new tie rods, remove the old tie rods counting the number of revolutions it takes to remove them, install new tie rod ends to the same number of revolutions.
