Question When to replace shock mounts?

When to replace shock mounts? If the mount center hole is intact and there is no ripping of the rubber molding around all the metal, is it still advisable to replace the mount if it has years on them? i.e. Say 80k mi. and 12 years on them, in this example, would there be any handling improvement by replacing them, or what might be noticeable with new ones?

If I would replace them I would stick with OEM, even the Moog ones are smaller/less beefy when you compare them side-by-side -- not sure why. I am also unsure if it matters?

TIA

I replaced mine because I didn't know how rusted it would be down in there. They looked okay once you clean the rust out. But the mounts to the body were new, which made me feel better. I'd at least look at it, but if you want it to be quick, go ahead and order before you do it. It won't hurt anything to have new mounts.

If there is no visible ripping or tearing and everything is intact with the bolt studs and bolt holes then you should be alright. Obviously look for rust too, and check the hole where the shock shaft goes through and make sure that isn't torn up.

The isolators though are relatively cheap and that wouldn't be a bad idea to replace those.

Mine had/have 150k miles on them. They look really good actually surprisingly good....I reused them. I saw no distortion and very little rust. I would think the environment the car was in would have a large bearing on the shape of the rubber parts. My car spent most of its life in the north west in Oregon and was used primarily for an 80 mile per day round trip to work and back. Basically an easy life overall. Car also sat in a driveway un-driven for 5 years of its 21 year life span...
